According to Jean-Luc Godard’s wife, the director will not be traveling to the U.S. to accept an honorary Academy Award, The Australian reports. The Academy announced last month that the Breathless helmer would be given the prize during the Governors Awards in November, but could not locate Godard in order to inform him. Godard’s wife Anne-Marie Mieville, however, informed The Australian that the filmmaker would not attend, but did not intend to snub Oscar. “He just told me, ‘It’s not the Oscars,’” she said. “At first he thought it was going to be part of the same ceremony, then he realized it was a separate thing in November.”

She continued: “Jean-Luc won’t go to America, he’s getting old for that kind of thing. Would you go all that way just for a bit of metal?” Mieville told reporters that a member of Godard’s production team will likely show up to accept the award on his behalf. She also insisted that the director plans to respond to the Academy regarding the honor.

Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway will co-host the 2011 Oscar ceremony, its organisers have announced.

According to producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer, the "fresh, exciting and multi-talented" pair "personify the next generation of Hollywood icons".

Hathaway was nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for Rachel Getting Married, while Franco is best known for his Harry Osborn role in the Spider-Man films.

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin co-hosted this year's awards in March.

Cohen and Mischer said they hoped the Oscar broadcast would enable Franco and Hathaway to "showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world".

"We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that," they continued.

Hathaway, whose films include Alice in Wonderland, Becoming Jane and The Devil Wears Prada, has appeared on four previous Oscar telecasts.

In 2009, the 28-year-old was memorably plucked from the audience by then host Hugh Jackman to perform a musical skit based on the film Frost/Nixon.

Franco, whose other films include Milk, Pineapple Express and Eat, Pray, Love, will be making his second appearance on an Oscar show.

The 32-year-old has been tipped for a best actor nomination next year for his role as a trapped rock climber in Danny Boyle's new film 127 Hours.

The Academy Awards will be held on 27 February at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Before that, Hathaway will co-host this year's Nobel peace prize concert in Norway on 11 December with actor Denzel Washington.

A total of 41 songs are in contention for the best original song category at the 2011 Oscars, it has been announced.

Three of them come from Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, which had its UK premiere this week.

Tracks performed by Gwyneth Paltrow, Janet Jackson and Alanis Morissette also feature on the longlist.

The eligible songs will be whittled down to a list of no more than five by the time the Academy Award nominations are announced on 25 January.

The 2011 Oscars will be held on 27 February at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Paltrow - who previously had a singing role in 2000 film Duets - features on two eligible tracks taken from her country music drama, Country Strong.

One of them, Me and Tennessee, which Paltrow sings with country star Tim McGraw - was written by her husband, Coldplay star Chris Martin.

Under Academy rules, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film.

Last year's best song award went to The Weary Kind, from the Jeff Bridges music drama Crazy Heart.

The King's Speech has picked up recognition in 12 categories to lead the nominations at the 2011 Academy Awards.

The royal drama, which centres on King George VI's attempts to overcome a crippling stammer as World War II approaches, has scooped nominations for 'Best Picture', 'Best Director' and 'Best Adapted Screenplay'.

The British film also has a strong presence in the acting categories as stars Colin Firth ('Best Actor'), Geoffrey Rush ('Supporting Actor') and Helena Bonham Carter ('Supporting Actress') all score Oscar nods.

Joel and Ethan Coen's remake of True Grit is close behind with 10 nominations in total, while The Social Network and Inception have secured eight nods apiece - including appearances in the 'Best Picture' line-up.

The remaining 'Best Picture' contenders are Black Swan, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3 and Winter's Bone.

Directors Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), the Coen brothers, David Fincher (The Social Network), Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) and David O. Russell (The Fighter) have been nominated for the 'Best Director' prize.

In the 'Best Actor' nominations, Firth and last year's winner Jeff Bridges are up against Javier Bardem (Biutiful), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and James Franco (127 Hours).

Meanwhile, 'Best Actress' will see Black Swan's Natalie Portman up against Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) and Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine).

The 2011 Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

A Northern Ireland film about a schoolboy smitten with his teacher has been shortlisted for an Oscar.

"The Crush", a 15-minute short shot in Skerries in County Dublin in 2009, is one of five films nominated for the best live action short film.

The Crush was written and directed by Belfast-born Michael Creagh and produced by Damon Quinn, one of BBC NI's Hole in the Wall Gang.

In the film the schoolboy challenges his teacher's boyfriend to a duel.

Originally one of 76 films hoping to make it on to the "long list" of 10, it has already won international recognition, picking up a second prize at Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival.

Michael Creagh's son Oran makes his debut playing Ardal, an eight-year-old who falls in love with his teacher Miss Purdy.

It was a shock and it has not really sunk in yet”

Having given a her a toy ring to show his affection, heartbreak awaits when he bumps into Miss Purdy and her boyfriend, who have just bought a real engagement ring.

Devastated and spurned, he challenges the fiance to a duel with the winner the last man standing.

Irish short films have previously fared well in the Academy Awards with "Six Shooter" picking up top prize in 2006 and two other films receiving nominations in the past two years.

Michael Creagh has followed in their footsteps with his first foray into writing and directing and describes the recognition he has received as a dream come true.

"I am still coming to terms with it - it was a shock and it has not really sunk in yet, to be honest.

"My background is in advertising but to write and make my own film was something that I always had a hankering to do."

Making the film was an end in itself for Michael, with no expectation that it would go on to receive the recognition that it has.

Producer Damon Quinn spoke of his delight at the nomination
And after it premiered at the Kerry Film Festival, a subsequent rejection by the prestigious judges at the Sundance Festival made him wonder whether it would appeal beyond these shores.

"The Oscar nomination shows how subjective these things can be. I am very proud and it is a great honour for everyone involved in the film."

And what of the performance of his son, for whom it was also a debut performance?

"Oran was a natural. I thought long and hard about involving him in it and people thought it might be better if I got a kid who had a little bit more experience.

"In the end I was really glad I went with him. He showed a real maturity in the role, so much so that people forgot how young he was."

Having been made redundant a few months ago, the news is a welcome end to a difficult year for Michael.

Celine Dion will reportedly perform at this year's Oscars.

E! Online's Marc Malkin reports that the performer, who is due to return to her run of shows in Las Vegas following the birth of sons Eddy and Nelson last year, is in line to appear at the annual Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 27.

Dion will sing 'Smile' in the "in memoriam" section of the event, where the actors and industry figures that have passed away in the preceding 12 months are remembered.

The Canadian songstress already holds the record for the most number of performances at the awards ceremony.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway are due to co-present this year's event, which will be shown live on ABC.

Franco previously released audio of his rendition of Cher's Burlesque track 'You Haven't Seen The Last of Me' via his Twitter account, noting that it had been "pulled" from the Oscars show.
