An elimination rule change for the new season of So You Think You Can Dance has been announced.

Executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe has revealed that just one dancer will be booted from the Fox show every week, rather than the usual two.

Writing on his Twitter account, he said: "First rule change. Only one dancer will leave the competition each week and not two."

He added: "Many more changes to come by the end of this week."

The previous format for the show saw one male and one female dancer being voted off the programme every week.

The seventh season of So You Think You Can Dance will premiere on Fox on May 27.

A second rule change has been announced for the new season of So You Think You Can Dance.

Executive producer and creator Nigel Lythgoe confirmed via Twitter that "the partners will change every single week" during the Fox show's seventh season.

He added that tomorrow's rule change "will shock" viewers.

Lythgoe previously revealed that just one contestant will be eliminated each week this season, rather than the usual two dancers.

Nigel Lythgoe has revealed a further two changes to the upcoming season of So You Think You Can Dance.

Writing on his Twitter account, the creator and executive producer unveiled that dancers in the sixth season will no longer be able to choose their genre of dance, and that less than four people will compete in the finale.

Previously announced changes include only one competitor leaving the show each week, partners changing each week, and the axing of the traditional Top 20 format.

Lythgoe wrote: "Of course there's still one more exciting and awesome change that links together the other small changes and makes sense of the entire show."

So You Think You Can Dance returns on May 27 to Fox.
