Tim Burton will direct a 3D stop-motion film based on the original Addams Family cartoons, says Deadline.
The Alice In Wonderland helmer, who was previously involved in stop-motion animations The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, will take inspiration from Charles Addams's original New Yorker drawings and not the '60s TV show or '90s movies with Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston.
Universal-housed Illumination Entertainment has picked up the rights to the cartoon and will produce for Burton, who is expected to put his own visual stamp on the characters of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester and Lurch.
Burton is also working on a feature-length version of his 1984 short Frankenweenie, about a bull terrier dog that's brought back to life with a bolt of lightning.
