CORONATION Street is to screen Soapland's first ever transsexual wedding as part of the show's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Café owner Roy Cropper (David Neilson) will finally wed sex-swap lover Hayley in a ceremony to make their partnership official.
The pair had their relationship blessed in 1999, but UK law did not then allow transsexuals to marry in their new gender.
Fans saw Hayley - born Harold Patterson - change her name by deed poll to Hayley Cropper, but the pair were never legally wed.
The law was changed in 2004 and Roy and Hayley, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, will take advantage later this year.
But the marriage is set to cause friction as Roy wants a low budget register office wedding, while Hayley wants a plush do - causing her to ban him from her bed.
An insider said: "Thankfully, Roy relents after Hayley puts the pressure on and it's a day for all the street's residents to celebrate."

Well it might be good news, but you know what happens in soaps as soon as two people get married. How many marriages last beyond a year?

My advice is don't do it Roy and Hayley!!!

The ink is not yet dry on the marriage certificate when Hayley will start an affair with Norris, no doubt :p

Julie Hesmondhalgh has insisted that her Coronation Street alter ego Hayley Cropper will have a "simple" wedding.

Hayley and Roy (David Neilson) are to marry later in the year as part of the long-running serial's 50th anniversary celebrations.

The 40-year-old actress told TV Times: "After everything she's been through with the siege, Hayley wants something quite simple that reflects both her interests, and salsa is so much her and not him."

Hayley recently escaped death in the Siege Week plot, which saw the evil Tony Gordon (Gray O'Brien) break out of prison and hold three victims inside the Underworld factory.

THINGS finally turn out all white for Corrie lovebirds Hayley and Roy Cropper as they tie the knot.
The hapless pair - who had their relationship blessed a few years ago because transsexual Hayley wasn't legally allowed to marry - look delighted being covered in confetti.

In the swing ... secret lesbians Sophie and Sian
Zenpix
But viewers realise later this summer that things aren't completely plain sailing for the duo, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh and David Neilson.
Hayley's bridesmaids Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly) and Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine) get caked in dirt.
But best man Kirk Sutherland (Andy Whyment) stays squeaky clean and looks sharp in a grey suit.
While lesbians Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) get into the spirit by showing off some girl power moves.
Roy proposed after they escaped the Underworld siege by killer jail fugitive Tony Gordon, which saw the killer die when the factory exploded.
So it seems Hayley has something old, something new, something borrowed and something blew...up.

IT looks like Corrie's Hayley Cropper may not get to the church on time as she's left chasing after a steam train on her wedding day.

The bride-to-be - who is finally due to wed Roy (David Neilson) in a ceremony later this summer - is left stranded on the train tracks with her bridesmaids Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly) and Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine).

And in the soap's hilarious upcoming scenes, the only option Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) has to try to catch up with the train is on a railway pump trolley powered by the pair.

Becky is forced to hitch her dress up to work the wagon - and she and Fiz both get covered in dirt in the process.

But will Hayley make her special day?

I think looney Mary may play a part in the wedding I can see her becoming obsessive with Hayley since she gave her a wedding dress.

Coronation Street's Julie Hesmondhalgh has gushed about her "sexy" co-star David Neilson.

Julie and David play Hayley and Roy Cropper, the kind-hearted couple who run Roy's Rolls cafe.

The actress told Reveal magazine: "[David] is very sexy. My friends laugh when I tell them but then they meet him and see that he's a very sophisticated and elegant man - you'd be surprised."

In the soap, Roy and transsexual Hayley are preparing to tie the knot after a law change means they can get married officially.

"Normally we all hate filming weddings as it's a lot of hanging around, but this time we had beautiful weather and were surrounded by gorgeous Lancashire countryside," Julie said.

The full interview is in Reveal magazine, on sale on Tuesday.

Julie Hesmondhalgh is planning a break from Coronation Street shortly after the 50th anniversary celebrations at the end of the year.
The 40-year-old actress, who plays dowdy Hayley Cropper in the ITV1 soap, admitted she had been inspired to take a sabbatical by Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster on screen.
Sally recently returned to Weatherfield after battling breast cancer. "I'm inspired by all the stuff she's been saying about sorting her priorities," Julie said.

"I'd quite like to do a big world trip with the family."
Corrie bosses are understood to be supportive of Julie's plans to take some time off. An ITV spokesman said: "As long as we have notice, we should be able to accommodate her request."
Julie has been in Corrie since she was 28 and the past year had been a busy one for Hayley - storylines included a wacky wedding and being held hostage by crazed killer Tony Gordon.

David Neilson has predicted that his Coronation Street alter ego Roy Cropper will stay permanently with Hayley.

Speaking to What's On TV, the 61-year-old actor described the couple, who are marrying soon, as "conservative" and unlikely to have affairs.

He said: "They are a conservative couple with a small 'c' and what they really care about is fitting in. Roy is proud of his relationship with Hayley.

"But I don't think marriage will change anything - although they will certainly be a bit poorer. They'll carry on as normal. They won't have an uneventful married life because this is a soap, but I can't imagine them going off and having affairs or anything."

Loved the Hen night last night. Becky proved she can be warm and caring under that hard shell and still give her mates a great night.

Corrie being a comedy show rather than a soap (take a hint soap awards - River City)_ , its the only way they could get away with the train stunt. Mary had no time to uncouple the carriage , if she did it would have been left at the station.

I wondered about that, too. Still, I really enjoyed the episodes, even if they weren't very true-to-life.

Julie Hesmondhalgh has announced that she is taking a short break from filming Coronation Street.

The Hayley Cropper actress is starring in a new stage play called Black Roses at Manchester's Royal Exchange, reports the Coronation Street Blog.

Hesmondhalgh confirmed that she will be off the set for nearly two months, posting on Twitter: "Right that's me done. Bye bye weatherfield til October! #bitoftheatre #sicksinmouth."

Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster will tell the story of how a young student was murdered for dressing differently. Hesmondhalgh will play Sophie's mum Sylvia.

Hesmondhalgh, who has held her transsexual Weatherfield role since 1998, previously took a year-long hiatus in 2007.

Poet Simon Armitage will read an elegy to the late teenager in the piece, which premiered on Radio 4 last year to critical acclaim.
