View Full Version : Adoption storyline for Corrie favourites
Coronation Street couple Steve and Becky McDonald will decide to adopt a child in a forthcoming storyline, it has been revealed.
The pair, played by Simon Gregson and Katherine Kelly, agree to the idea after Becky is told that she will never be able to carry a baby to full term.
Becky receives the devastating news after suffering two miscarriages. In recent weeks, viewers have seen the Weatherfield favourites celebrating Becky's first pregnancy ahead of their future heartbreak.
It is thought that Steve first suggests adoption but receives a sceptical response from his wife, who asks: "Just who do you think I am? I'll tell you who I'm not and that's Angelina Jolie or Madonna. We can't just run around willy-nilly adopting kids like some demented super-celebrity. And besides, I'm not having other people's cast-offs."
However, Becky later grows to accept the idea following advice from her friend Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh).
A show source told the Daily Star: "Our outgoing producer Kim Crowther has been determined to have an adoption storyline in the show for ages. Last year it was on the cards that a broody Liz McDonald would adopt a child but Bev Callard, who plays Liz, had to take several months off."

Would Becky have problems adopting since she was in prison and would have a record?
That's what I was thinking. She was also a known drug user.
And so was Steve. But this is soap land, where these things don't matter too much if it suits the story writers :)
But then the spoiler does not actually say that they will be successful, only that they will try to adopt. Maybe the scriptwriters and researchers can show what it is like to go through the process, only to fail at the end.
Katherine Kelly has revealed that her new short hairstyle will fit in with her Coronation Street character's forthcoming adoption storyline.
The actress, who plays Weatherfield hellraiser Becky McDonald, got rid of her long locks last month and recently showed off her new look at the Royal Television Society awards.
Speaking to Holy Soap about her image change, Kelly explained: "It was kind of a decision that was forced upon us. My hair is naturally almost black - I'm typical Irish colouring, with green eyes, almost black hair and pale skin.
"I was blonde for a job for two years before I got Corrie and have been here for four years so that's six years of bleaching my hair.
"It was slowly getting thinner and thinner so we packed it out with extensions to keep it thick, but my hairdresser said I couldn't keep putting in extensions indefinitely."
To explain the change, viewers will soon see Becky visiting Audrey's salon as part of an image overhaul she plots after deciding that she wants to adopt a child.
Kelly confirmed: "With the adoption storyline, she borrows Claire Peacock's clothes for a while because she wants to look good for the social worker coming round. We thought it was a good opportunity for her to have a slight image change.
"I love Becky with long hair and if it could have been possible I'd have kept her with long blonde hair forever but sometimes nature and practicalities take over!"

Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly has predicted that her character's current adoption storyline will not have a happy ending.
Earlier this year, the actress's alter ego Becky McDonald and husband Steve (Simon Gregson) decided that they wanted to adopt a child following Becky's two miscarriages.
However, speaking to RTE, Kelly warned: "With regards to the adoption, I don't know for definite but I've got a feeling that that's not going to work out, because things just don't work out for Becky. I would be surprised if that is all plain sailing."
The 30-year-old also cast doubt on whether having a child would match the expectations of her troubled character, who has been part of the Weatherfield soap since 2006.
She commented: "I think Becky just wants to be happy. She's not an ambitious person, but her dream is just to be happy, and she's married Steve and she's happy, but there's still that hole and I think this baby is her trying to fill this hole, and actually I think if she did get a baby she still wouldn't have the hole filled, because it's about being happy with yourself.
"And I think deep down she's not really. She's a very disturbed person. She just needs a bit of therapy really, I think, to truly be happy because Roy and Hayley have taken it as far as they possibly can."

CORRIE'S wannabe parents Becky and Steve MacDonald are finally set to adopt the child they yearn for - when Becky hauls her long-lost half-sister's son from CARE.
Teenage tearaway Kylie Turner arrives on the Street as a one-woman crimewave. She's been declared an unfit mother and had her boy Max taken away.
But instead of sending her packing, Becky spots the opportunity of an instant family. An insider said: "When Becky learns about young Max her eyes light up and she decides to go for it."

I thought that might happen when I read Becky's sister and nephew were coming into the show. It's the perfect answer for Becky.
Coronation Street has been accused of frightening people away from adopting children.
An adoption agency blasted scenes which showed Steve and Becky McDonald (Simon Gregson and Katherine Kelly) face a tough meeting with an adoption panel, which ultimately led to their application being turned down.
Patricia Hurst of Caritas told the Manchester Evening News that the panel would not be as intimidating as the ITV1 soap had portrayed. She also said that issues such as the couple's smoking and Becky's miscarriage would have been dealt with beforehand.
"It was portrayed as an ambush and that is just not the case," she claimed. "People are quite anxious and vulnerable when they come before a panel and the panel knows this. They do a lot to make the experience very user-friendly. It was quite confrontational - maybe because it made good TV."
She continued: "As there are hundreds of children waiting for adoptive families in the North West alone we are concerned this may frighten people and put them off applying for adoption.
"We want to assure potential adoptive applicants that this would not happen."
A Corrie spokeswoman defended the scenes, saying: "We spoke to adoption agencies and had their full support. We have to have some dramatic licence but it was an accurate storyline."
CORRIE'S childless Becky McDonald will try to BUY her half-sister Kylie's son Max after helping the tearaway teenager get him out of care.
Becky, played by Katherine Kelly, will order hubby Steve McDonald to raise a whopping £30,000 to pay for the child.
The Rovers landlord is not keen on the plan but goes along with it for Becky's sake.
Soap viewers recently saw Becky devastated when she and Steve (Simon Gregson) were told they could not legally adopt.
And fists flew between Becky and Kylie (Paula Lane) when the lying half-sister suggested they were rejected because Becky had bedded her dad.
But after the pair kiss and make up Becky helps Kylie to "retrieve" Max, then bonds with the boy.
And when Kylie offers to sell him so she can go to live with a holiday lover in Turkey, Becky goes for it.
The storyline will air on ITV1 in a few weeks.

I thought something like that might happen.
