The character of Declan Napier in Neighbours has been recast.

James Sorensen, who currently plays Declan in the soap, has decided to leave the show to pursue a career outside of television.

A spokesperson for Five has now revealed that Erin Mullally, 20, will step into the role when Sorensen leaves.

She added: "As the character of Declan is extremely popular, and with some sensational storylines planned, it was decided that the character would be recast."

Mullally will first appear as Declan on UK screens this summer.

Will get some getting used to in the beginning, I guess

I think it only works to recast a character if the character is just a child and then changed with a teen i.e Lucy Robinson. but at this stage in the characters role it would be better for him to leave with india

I don't like the idea. Works better with children when they've grown up, as was said earlier.

Neighbours star James Sorensen has revealed that the forthcoming transformation of his character Declan Napier will take place without any fuss.

Last month, it was announced that Erin Mullally is to take over the role of the Ramsay Street favourite because Sorensen is leaving the programme.

Speaking to Holy Soap about how the recast will work, Sorensen explained: "[It'll be] nothing over the top. I'm Declan one day and the next day it's Erin. Pretty simple.

"That's how it works, I can't continue, so Erin comes in and picks up the baton. I think it's easier for the viewers to accept when it's a simple change-over."

The actor added that he is still backing the decision to recast Declan and hopes that viewers will grow to accept Mullally's interpretation of the character.

He said: "Erin will come in and play his version of Declan, he can't play it exactly as I do and I and the producers would never expect him to do it any other way. All I can say to the Declan supporters is that Erin will be terrific, give him a go, you'll be surprised."

Sorensen decided to quit Neighbours because he wants to pursue a career away from television.

Neighbours actor Sam Clark has spoken out in support of his new co-star Erin Mullally.

Mullally was recruited to take over the role of young father Declan Napier earlier this year following James Sorensen's decision to quit the part.

Speaking to Holy Soap about the recast, Clark commented: "[Erin's] doing a great job. He has to work with babies and start up a relationship that has already been going on for a while that James set up.

"He's got a massive ask on him, as well as winning over the fans of Declan, so it's a really strange one. But hopefully everyone can understand why it's happened and accept Erin as the new Declan."

Clark, who plays Ramsay Street's Ringo Brown, also confirmed that viewers can expect the new Declan to be "different in a lot of ways".

Sorensen left Neighbours in order to pursue a career in the army.

Neighbours newcomer Erin Mullally has admitted that he was "shocked" when he learned that producers wanted to cast him as Declan Napier.

The 20-year-old was asked to take over the role at the beginning of the year after existing Declan actor James Sorensen decided to bow out for a new career in the army.

Speaking about the recast for the first time, Mullally told TV Week: "I was a little shocked, to be honest. When I went to the audition, I wasn't told anything about the role I was going for. It was all top secret.

"So when I found out, there was an initial feeling of, 'I don't know if I can pull this off'. I was completely overwhelmed. What an amazing way to start my career! I'm living the dream of thousands of actors."

Mullally confirmed that he watched "hours and hours" of episodes to research Declan's history before filming his first scenes.

On whether fans will grow to like his version of the character, he commented: "I'm sure that initially people will be quite confronted by a new face with the same character name - I'm not fooling myself about that. But hopefully people will come to accept it."

Neighbours newcomer Erin Mullally has revealed that he received advice from predecessor James Sorensen as he prepared to take over the role of Declan Napier.

The actor was recruited by show bosses at the beginning of the year after Sorensen decided to bow out as Declan in order to join the army.

Speaking to Inside Soap about how the recast worked, Mullally explained: "We crossed over for a couple of weeks, which was fantastic. It was great to talk about Declan's values and his priorities in life.

"James told me that his daughter India comes first, followed by his mum Rebecca and girlfriend Kate, then his friends. That was helpful to know."

The star added that he also watched dozens of previous Neighbours episodes to catch up on important events in Declan's life.

He said: "When I saw how much he's been through, I realised I had pretty big shoes to fill. They eased me into it so I didn't have to do very much in my first week. In fact, it's only now - quite a way down the track - that I'm getting some big storylines."

Apparently, we'll be seeing the new Declan from next Monday (the 21st June).
