Eastenders star Preeya Kalidas has dramatically quit the show after starring in one of its most explosive storylines ever.

The 28-year-old actress, who plays new bride Amira Masood, plans to launch a pop career when she leaves the BBC soap in the summer.

Preeya's character Amira has just wed Syed in a traditional Muslim ceremony - after Syed's gay fling with Christian Clarke (John Partridge).

Show bosses are now deciding whether Amira leaves in another sensational storyline, after discovering her husband's secret.

Last night a spokesman for the actress, who joined EastEnders in 2008, said: "The BBC and Preeya agreed to extend her contract for a short period because of her prominent storyline."

"She is at present recording her first record due to be released in the summer."

Hey everyone it is sad that the character of Amira is leaving? how ever I dont think we will hear the last of Preeya Kalidas she was quite well know before Eastenders on the westend stages and she has been in a couple of Andrew Lloyd webber productions so she is no stranger to the industry.

She also has a great voice I have seen her in Bombay Dreams a few years ago and she was great. I wish her all the best in her career ahead.

Is the actress still seeing the actor who plays Syed?

If so maybe he will leave also

I think its pretty obvious what's going to happen. The affair with Syed and Christian isnt over, they still love each other, and as soon as Amira and Syed arrive back on the square it is obvious that the cracks are already beginning to show. So much so that Amira has a dalliance with Danny Mitchell. Its a brilliant storyline, i cant wait for it all to be revealed, and hopefully then we will see Syed and Christian having a proper relationship, in the open.

Yes, hopefully something good will come out of the sham marriage. Like I said before though, you never know with soaps!

Maybe she could get murdered and we could have several months of whodunnit, with several suspects such as Syed, Christian, Jane, Danny, Zainab, Lucy...

I don't think any soap has ever done a storyline like that before...:hmm:

EastEnders actress Preeya Kalidas this afternoon confirmed that she has filmed her final scenes with the BBC soap.

In January, it was announced that the 29-year-old intended to step down from her role as Amira Masood after only a year to pursue a singing career.

Since then, it has been rumoured that her departure would revolve around the reveal of her screen husband Syed's (Marc Elliott) gay love affair with Christian Clarke (John Partridge).

At the time, show bosses declined to unveil the circumstances or timing surrounding Amira's exit.

This afternoon, however, Kalidas tweeted: "Just filmed last emotional scenes on EE which will b aired 26 April!!! X (sic)"

Following a flurry of messages from fans, she added: "Thanks for all your messages! Let the next chapter begin!"

An EastEnders insider this evening told Digital Spy: "The Masoods have loads of dramatic scenes to come over the next few months. Amira's leaving the Square but bosses are keeping tight-lipped over whether Syed's leaving, too. Could this be the end of the road for Syed and Christian? Or will Amira leave alone?"

Kalidas's first single is due to be released in the summer.

Well I don't think Syed is leaving too or we would have heard about it. No doubt her exit storyline will be dramatic. She's bound to find out that Syed's gay before she leaves because the producers will want to wring every ounce of drama from the situation.

AMIRA is hysterical when she finally finds out about Syed's affair with Christian in EastEnders next week.
She sees the 'Syed Loves Christian' message scrawled over the wall in their new house and demands to know what is going on.

And when Christian (John Partridge) arrives on the scene he confesses that he's been sleeping with her husband for months - causing Amira (Preeya Kalidas) to break down.

Syed (Marc Elliott) then admits that he is gay and a disgusted Amira, who tells the family she is pregnant in the soap later this week, races out of the house.

Later, at the Masood's, Christian turns up - causing Amira to fly into a rage.

At breaking point, she reveals she's not pregnant and tells everyone that Syed is gay.

She then packs up her things and leaves Walford for good.

Preeya Kalidas has teased the outcome of her character's final scenes on EastEnders.

The star's alter ego Amira Masood leaves Albert Square tonight after finally discovering that her husband Syed (Marc Elliott) has been having a gay affair with Christian (John Partridge).

She told BBC News: "We were quite looking forward to this moment and we're both really excited about playing these scenes tonight. It was really emotional and really quite traumatic and really hard for us when we were doing it."

The 28-year-old actress, who quit the show to pursue a pop career, added: "She does leave but it's who she leaves with, and [under] what terms?"

Meanwhile, Elliott said: "I think the audience is ready now to see some sort of conclusion to a story that's been bubbling for a bit.

"John is brilliant and it's been fantastic building up to this moment, and we've had lots of emotion along the way."

EastEnders airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.

Former EastEnders actress Preeya Kalidas has given the thumbs up to Christian and Syed's relationship in the Albert Square serial.

The actress and singer, who played Amira Shah in the soap, bowed out on screen at the end of last month upon discovering her husband Syed's (Marc Elliott) infidelity with their close friend Christian (John Partridge).

Despite her character's emotional departure, Kalidas expressed her approval of Chryed on the red carpet at this year's British Soap Awards. She told DS: "The whole build-up of that story has been pretty intense and I think after everything they've been through, it'll be really sad for them not to at least give it a chance."

Despite having only filmed her final scenes in March, she gave a strong hint that she would be happy, if asked, to return at some point in the future in order to resolve the pregnancy secret Amira drove out of the Square with.

She said: "I had an amazing time on EastEnders and I've loved every minute of it. You never say never and as you know, I have left with a secret, so who knows?"

Preeya Kalidas has paid tribute to the "glamorous women" who inspired her to enter the music industry.

The former EastEnders actress, who releases her first single 'Shimmy' on July 26, said one of her earliest memories was being "entranced" as she watched Madonna on Top Of The Pops.

"Music is not something that I've just plucked out of the air or that I'm turning to to capitalise on my exposure in a soap opera. For me it's always been my passion, something I've always wanted to do," she told PA.

Kalidas, 29, announced her decision to quit the BBC One soap in January after nearly a year playing beautician turned caterer Amira Shah. Her final scenes, in which Amira finally discovered that her husband Syed (Marc Elliott) was having a gay affair with Christian (John Partridge), aired last month.

Preeya Kalidas has confessed that she felt emotional when she watched the aftermath of her character's departure from EastEnders.

The actress's alter ego Amira Masood bowed out of Walford earlier this year after discovering that husband Syed (Marc Elliott) had cheated on her with Christian Clarke (John Partridge).

Following Amira's departure, the Masoods faced more turmoil as Syed tried to commit suicide. Although his attempt was unsuccessful, family matriarch Zainab (Nina Wadia) later declared that she wished her son had died.

Speaking to Holy Soap about the shock scenes, Kalidas revealed: "I watched the aftermath of when Amira left because I had no idea what was going to happen. It was really upsetting. It was actually quite distressing. It was all very sad and everyone was down in the dumps.

"The moment that was really upsetting was when Zainab told Syed she would rather he died than being gay. That was so heartbreaking."

Former EastEnders actress Preeya Kalidas has admitted that the first screen kiss she shared with co-star Marc Elliott was "so bad".

The 29-year-old made the confession as she reflected on the time she spent with Elliott for their roles as Walford couple Amira and Syed Masood.

Speaking to Metro, Kalidas commented: "We just became like brother and sister in the end, but our first kiss was so bad. He just shoved his tongue down my throat."

The star is now concentrating on a music career and recently filmed the video for her debut single 'Shimmy'.

She said: "It was shot in this horrible old warehouse filled with asbestos. Everyone was wearing masks but I was in my heels. It will be really colourful, though."

'Shimmy' will be released on July 26.

Preeya Kalidas has admitted that she would consider a return to EastEnders.

The actress quit her role as Amira Shah earlier this year in order to focus on her music career.

Kalidas has just released her debut single 'Shimmy' and told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat that she was excited to put her music out there.

"For me just having the opportunity to get it released and get it out there is amazing. So, I'm just enjoying the ride - we'll see where it takes me," she said.

On a return to Albert Square, she added: "I had an amazing time on the show and being part of such a powerful, interesting, controversial storyline.

"But would I go back? Never say never. She [Amira] deserves to go back after what she has been through."

Kalidas recently told DS that people wrongly assume she only decided to pursue a pop career after leaving EastEnders.

Its obvious she was quite musical anyway because she was in Bombay Dreams, and we all know she can sing. We'll see how it develops. I personally think she will do well in the music industry, cos she has a strong enough voice that she's made it in musicals and she is gorgeous. It's the perfect combination. Sad for Eastenders though losing her, and I want her to come back so there can be a storyline with the baby, Syed and Chrisitan.

Former EastEnders star Preeya Kalidas has refused to rule out another Walford stint for her character Amira Shah.

Amira bowed out from Albert Square last month after finally realising that Syed Masood (Marc Elliott) would never love her. She had been back on screen for five months.

Kalidas told Lorraine today (April 25): "I think the thing with Amira is, she's been through a lot [and] she needs to sort out her life. She needs to find her direction. I think she was spending too much time focused on Syed and making decisions that I don't think she was that clear about."

She continued: "It was really difficult playing her because there were so many times when I thought, 'You poor thing - just be strong'. And by the end of it she was, and she left!"

Asked whether she would return to EastEnders again, the actress replied: "You never know. But I do think she needs some time out."

Kalidas is currently concentrating on her music career as she promotes the upcoming release of new single 'Love Between Us'.

She added: "I've been writing and recording for years, since I was a teenager. It's been a huge passion of mine for years."

Kalidas is in the running for the 'Sexiest Female' prize at this year's British Soap Awards, which take place on Saturday (April 28).

Former EastEnders actress Preeya Kalidas has described working on the show as one of her "best jobs", but would not be drawn on whether she would return to the soap in the future.

The 32-year-old, who played Amira Masood, bowed out of the BBC soap last year after her husband Syed admitted that he was in love with Christian.

She told This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby that it was "fantastic being part of a storyline that was so controversial", adding: "I think it related to so many people and it provoked so much debate and I loved playing her and having the chance to play so much drama and have so much fun with the cast."

Asked by Willoughby if she would ever consider going back to the soap, Kalidas commented: "Well, she's not dead," adding: "As I said, I had such a great time on EastEnders, it was probably one of my best jobs in the sense that I had the chance to play a great character and also work with some talented actors. We used to laugh a lot."

Kalidas will next be seen in BBC Three's Bollywood Carmen - a live outdoor theatre experience similar to the 2011 production of Frankenstein's Wedding. The show will broadcast on the channel on June 9.
