Simon Cowell is to mastermind a song for the victims of the Haiti earthquake after Gordon Brown asked him to get involved.

The pop music mogul is understood to be rounding-up a host of singers to appear on the charity single.

Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle are said to be in the frame to appear, with work expected to be completed within 48 hours.

Cowell confirmed the news at last night's National Television Awards, explaining: "We made a decision today.

"We had a request from the Prime Minister and The Sun newspaper - would we put a record together?

"We haven't got an awful lot of time, but we are going to do something and attempt to raise as much money as possible", he explained.

As previously reported, Jay-Z and U2 are also said to be recording a Haiti fundraiser, with production from Swizz Beats.
