Hollyoaks' Kris Fisher's happiness won't last, actor Gerard McCarthy has declared.

The bisexual romeo - who is currently blissfully settled with Nancy Hayton (Jessica Fox) and her nephew Charlie (Joshua McConville) - won't have a happy ever after, and it will only be a matter of time before he breaks her heart and falls back into his old ways.

"He is settled at the minute but that doesn't last very long because Kris is the sort of character who is at his best when he's up to his old tricks and jumping in and out of bed with all sorts, so his relationship with Nancy doesn't last very long," revealed the Northern Irish actor.

Gerard, who has played Kris for over three years, admitted he loves working with baby Joshua, and the experience has even made him crave fatherhood.

"It is a shame because I was really enjoying working with the baby. It made me a bit broody," he said.

Gerard McCarthy has admitted that he will be "gutted" when he bows out of Hollyoaks later this year.

The actor is leaving his part as cross-dresser Kris Fisher on the soap in order to take on a West End role in Flashdance - The Musical.

Speaking to Fate magazine about his forthcoming departure, McCarthy commented: "I'll be devastated. Right now I've got another three and half months to go and I'll just be gutted when the time comes to leave. I've begged the producers not to kill me off!

"The only reason why I'm leaving is because, hand on heart, I really miss doing something else. My background is musical theatre and having done four years at Hollyoaks, I'm really missing that.

"I just need to get this out of my system and then next year I'll be banging at the door of Hollyoaks shouting, 'Take me back!'"

Flashdance - The Musical is being choreographed by former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips.

Hollyoaks departee Gerard McCarthy has revealed that his former castmate Zoë Lister was approached to film a short stint for his departure but was unavailable.

The 29-year-old - who plays bisexual crossdresser Kris Fisher in the Channel 4 soap - confirmed earlier this year that he is to bow out of the serial in the coming months to pursue other projects.

With details of his screen departure being kept tightly under wraps, McCarthy did reveal on the red carpet at this year's British Soap Awards that his former colleague Zoë Lister - who was written out last year - was asked to return for the occasion.

He told DS: "I did ask if Zoë was going to come back and I think Zoë was unavailable. I'm gutted that she's not. It would have been nice for Zak, Kris and Zoë to all leave together because we all started on the same day."

Gerard McCarthy has confirmed that he will be back on screen in Hollyoaks within the next few weeks.

The actor bowed out from his role as Kris Fisher on the Channel 4 soap earlier this year and subsequently landed the part of Fenton in a production of The Merry Wives Of Windsor at the Globe Theatre.

However, in the aftermath of next week's explosive fire episodes, Kris makes a brief return to the village - although the full circumstances surrounding his comeback are currently unknown.

Writing on Twitter, McCarthy announced: "Okay.... so the cat's outta the bag! I am going back to Hollyoaks. It's only a flying visit this time though! I filmed it on a day when I didn't have a show @The_Globe...AND...I didn't go back for a funeral!!!"

Later, he added: "Wow! I'm overwhelmed by all your tweets! I really only did it cuz you all said you missed Kris.... so it's a big thank you to you lot!"

Kris's brother Malachy (Glen Wallace) is among the characters who are left in peril in the soap's shock blaze, which will be the focus of a special block of episodes next week.

McCarthy recently reprised his Merry Wives role in New York. The production is being staged at the city's Schimmel Center.
