R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass has died at a hospital in Philadelphia.
The 59-year-old, who found success in the 1970s and '80s, had been battling colon cancer for eight months.
"To all his fans who loved his music, thank you," his son Teddy Pendergrass II said in a statement. "He will live on through his music."
Pendergrass was left paralysed following a car accident in 1982. He spent six months in a hospital before recording new album Love Language the following year.
He returned to the stage at the Live Aid concert in 1985, performing from his wheelchair.
The singer, who is the first black male to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums, is survived by his son, two daughters, his wife, his mother and nine grandchildren.
I remember him. RIP Teddy
