Marsden hauls Ian in for questioning
Airs on Monday, January 18 2010 at 20:00 GMT on BBC One
While Janine attempts to assert her authority at the Car Lot, Peggy announces that The Vic's back in business. Roxy, however, isn't happy about Peggy taking over and Ronnie tries to broach the subject that Roxy's now the landlady. Later, Ronnie and Roxy enquire as to when Archie's body will be released, before Peggy asks them to have the pub ready by 5pm for the grand re-opening. When Ronnie shows her sister their mother's gloves she left behind, Roxy snatches them from her and bins them. Later, Roxy assures Ronnie that nothing will change between them now that she owns The Vic. When Roxy walks away, Ronnie lifts Glenda's gloves out of the bin and clutches them to her chest.
Later, Pat and Peggy speculate as to Archie's killer, while Peggy expresses her surprise that Archie left Roxy everything in his will. She goes on to suggest that despite Roxy being the legal owner of the pub, she's the true landlady. After finishing off a bottle of champagne, Peggy goes to survey the empty pub. Outside, Ronnie and Roxy see Archie's face on the poster watching over them, before spotting Janine lording it up at the Car Lot. With that, they
march over and put her in her place. While Roxy's at it, she demands their grandmother's engagement ring but Janine claims she doesn't have it any longer. Furious, Roxy announces that she has plans for the Car Lot. Back at The Vic, Roxy opens up slightly earlier than intended and Ronnie asks if Glenda's called about the funeral, to which Roxy claims that she hasn't. As Roxy celebrates in the bar, Ronnie calls Jack and asks for his help in finding her mum.
Meanwhile, Ian tries to talk to Jane about the situation with Janine but she ignores his attempts and suggests that he clean the floor before the social worker arrives. Ian later admits that he's scared about what could happen, but Jane simply suggests that he do something about it. With that, Ian heads over to Janine's flat and blurts out that she can't blackmail him any longer because Archie's laptop is on the canal basin. Janine, however, plays Ian a recording of their sexual dalliance and reiterates her £10,000 demand. Despite Jane begging him not to for fear that he'll expose himself as a primes suspect in Archie's murder, Ian decides to tell the police everything before Janine does. Ian's almost at the police station and Jane manages to convince him to pay Janine off otherwise the police involvement could ruin their chances to adopt.
Ian and Jane return home to find Peter, Lucy, the social worker and Janine - who's been singing their praises. Ian visits Janine and hands over £500. Janine's not impressed but Ian pushes her, cutting her lip in the process. With that, Ian warns her not to go to the police or she'll put herself in the frame for Archie's murder. Having washed Janine's blood off his ring, Ian apologises to Jane and the social worker for disappearing. When the social worker leaves, Ian assures Jane that he's sorted everything. Later in The Vic, though, DCI Marsden stops Ian from drinking and insists that he needs to be sober for his confession…
Elsewhere, Bianca tells Ricky that Martin and Sonia will be attending the wedding; Stacey visits her friend Becca at the psychiatric hospital; Denise isn't impressed by how flirty the chair of the church's fundraising committee Loretta is with Lucas; Jean tries to drag Bradley and Stacey along to The Vic's re-opening; Pat returns from New Zealand and is stunned to learn that Archie's been murdered; and Stacey texts her friend Becca and suggests that she stay on the Square instead of moving to the halfway house.
The evidence stacks up against Ian
Airs on Tuesday, January 19 2010 at 19:30 GMT on BBC One
As the police search the Beales' for evidence, Lucy starts moaning when they take her laptop, while Jane and Christian protest that Ian's innocent and that he didn't kill Archie. Bobby, however, knows that something's going on and asks if his daddy's going to prison. A crowd's gathered outside as the police remove evidence from the Beales'. Peggy assures Ronnie and Roxy that Ian's no murderer, before returning to The Vic. On their way back inside, Ronnie bumps into Jack and hands him details about Glenda in the hope that he can use his contacts to track her down. Jack's not happy that Roxy doesn't know what's going on and when Ronnie tries to talk to her sister about their mother, Roxy's dismissive.
At the police station, Janine maintains to DCI Marsden that she found the recording of her and Ian's sexual encounter on the laptop and decided to hand it in. She goes on to insist that both Archie and Ian took advantage of her and when Ian discovered the recording, he attacked her, cutting her lip. When questioned about Archie's laptop, Janine tells
Marsden that the audio recording on the laptop will prove that Ian murdered Archie. Back on the Square, Ryan confronts Janine about why she shopped Ian to the police and she claims that the police need a result and nobody cares about Ian anyway. Janine tries to get intimate with Ryan but he grabs her hand and walks out, exclaiming that she makes him sick.
In the interview room, Ian discusses his case with his solicitor, who suggests that he answer all questions asked of him. The lawyer checks that Ian's told him everything and Ian assures him that he has. When questioned about his sexual encounter with Janine, Ian refuses to answer and when told that the police have a statement from Janine accusing him of murdering Archie, Ian breaks down. Phil insists that he's the man they need to be talking to. When confronted with the audio file from his night with Janine, CCTV footage of him throwing Archie's laptop in the canal and Archie's sodden computer, Ian is firm - he didn't kill Archie and wants to be released.
Despite his solicitor asking to speak with him privately, an emotional Ian admits to having sex with Janine and that Archie was blackmailing him by using the audio as leverage. Ian goes on to admit that he broke into The Vic on Christmas Day to find the laptop and that Archie threw him out - but he went back later to retrieve it. Later, Ian's lying in a police cell when Marsden walks in. Ian jumps up excited about being released. Marsden, however, states that they're charging him with the murder of Archie Mitchell…
Elsewhere, Denise talks to Lucas about Ian and claims he's innocent, as she'd know if she was looking into the eyes of a murderer; Pat's surprised when Janine claims that Ian attacked her; Stacey asks Jean and Bradley if Becca can stay for a few days, but they're not keen on the idea and they believe Becca's presence could be bad for her; Jane and Pat discuss Ian's situation and Pat learns that the Beales' initial reluctance was because they didn't want the social to get wind of their predicament; Denise is furious that Loretta the fundraising leader fancies him but Lucas is frustrated by her suspicion; Simon calls Pat and she confirms that someone's valuing her house later in the day; Bradley and Jean aren't impressed to find a note from Stacey that she'll be back soon with Becca; and Jack goes off with Ronnie to find Glenda.
Ronnie grills Glenda about the past
Airs on Thursday, January 21 2010 at 19:30 GMT on BBC One
Ronnie rings the doorbell to her mother's flat and Glenda eventually lets her inside. Discussion quickly turns to Glenda's pregnancy at the time she left Ronnie and Roxy behind with Archie. Glenda admits that she gave birth to a boy called Daniel but attempts to dodge further interrogation. When Glenda protests that she left because of the way Archie treated her, Ronnie hits the roof and begins talking about how much she needed her mother through all what happened with Danielle. Staring at a photo of her granddaughter, Glenda notes that she was very pretty, prompting Ronnie to reveal that she only ever held her daughter twice - when she was born and when she died. With that Ronnie claims that if Glenda had never left all those years ago, they'd all be living as a happy family unit.
Ronnie demands a photo of her brother Daniel but Glenda avoids the subject. Glenda's saved by a knock at the door and she asks Ronnie to get rid of Reg, her neighbour. With a bunch of flowers in hand, Reg tries to force his way into the flat but Ronnie blocks his way. Reg is insistent and Ronnie eventually agrees to pass on the flowers. Reg asks for Ronnie's name and when she says it, it's clear that Glenda's never mentioned her. With Reg gone, Glenda emerges and jokes about Reg's rough appearance, before breaking down in tears about how long she's been separated from her children.
Glenda reveals that she threw Daniel out of the house when she realised how much like Archie he was and Ronnie's stunned by her mother's actions. She's furious when Glenda calls her Veronica, too, and quickly reminds her that her name is Ronnie. Leaving the flat, Ronnie's at the lift and she ignores her mother's question when she asks if they can be friends. Back on the Square, Ronnie and Jack have a coffee in the café and talk about Ronnie's mother. Ronnie then begins to speculate as to whether Daniel really exists as Glenda never showed her a photo. As Jack suggests that they search for him, Glenda's back at the flat and drops a mug when she hears a noise. As she turns, she sees a young man standing in the doorway…
Elsewhere, Stacey returns home with Becca; Ian's still at the police station and informs Jane of what's happened - they have so much evidence against him; Becca takes a shine to Bradley; Jane tells Ian that she'll do whatever it takes to get him released; Stacey and Becca go to The Vic for the evening and Stacey suggests heading out to a club, but Becca's unnerved by the prospect; Pat vows to help Jane fight for Ian's release; as Stacey agrees to a girly night-in, Becca has second thoughts and asks her to call their taxi back…
Pat suffers a heart attack
Airs on Friday, January 22 2010 at 20:00 GMT on BBC One
In the café, Pat learns from Jane that Ian's been refused bail and he'll be appearing at the magistrates' court later in the day. Pat turns up on Janine's doorstep but Janine doesn't want to talk. Janine realises that Pat's only there in the hope she'll drop her accusations against Ian. Janine goes on to tell Pat that she didn't kill Archie as she loved him. Back at home, Pat's asleep on the chair when Liam wakes her up with a cup of tea. Janine turns up for a heart-to-heart with Pat and when she mentions that Ian's innocent, Janine knows full well that Pat's expecting her to confess. After a barbed remark about Janine's form in the killing stakes, Janine lashes out and slaps Pat across the face. Pat walks into the kitchen and is clearly unwell as she leans over the sink.
Despite Janine's protestation that she and Archie had a mutual love for each other, Pat asks why Archie threw her out of The Vic on Christmas Day and why he only left her his Newton's cradle in his will. Bianca returns home to find Liam and Tiffany on the stairs and Pat arguing with Janine in the kitchen. While holding her left arm, Pat reveals that Simon's asked her to go live in New Zealand with him. At that moment, Bianca walks in stunned by the news, while Janine continues to talk at Pat about how much she loved Archie. However, Pat suddenly collapses and Bianca screams at Liam to call for an ambulance…
Meanwhile, Roxy quizzes Tracey as to why she's late for work but Roxy's in no mood for excuses. Peggy, however, informs Roxy that she told Tracy to come in late as she has lots of unpaid overtime to use. With that, Peggy tells Roxy that she has a lot to learn about managing a pub. Later, Bianca asks Peggy if she can have her wedding reception at The Vic and Peggy agrees. Roxy, however, interrupts and states that it will cost them £2,000 plus other expenses. Outraged at the price, Bianca announces that she's going elsewhere. When Bianca's gone, Peggy challenges Roxy about losing them good business.
While Ronnie asks Jack to keep their trip to see Glenda a secret, Peggy suggests that Roxy ask Tracey back to work. Roxy, however, claims that she doesn't want Tracey working there any more and Peggy's seething when she sees Roxy's new bar staff. Peggy claims that Roxy can't run her pub, but Roxy promptly reminds her that she now owns it…
Elsewhere, Denise isn't happy to learn that Lucas gave Loretta her number in case she couldn't get hold of him any other way; Jean tries to get Stacey to eat a sandwich but Stacey throws it in the bin; Lucas tells Denise that Loretta wants her wedding dress for the jumble; Bianca tells Denise that Loretta's a total witch and Denise decides to expose Loretta's true colours; Jean tells Bradley that Becca's upset Stacey but Bradley realises that he's driven Becca away; and Denise goes to help at the jumble with Bianca where they dupe Loretta into thinking she's won a raffle.
Also, Roxy asks Chelsea if she's free to do a shift at The Vic; Lucas relents and agrees to let Denise keep her wedding dress and to make her fundraising co-ordinator; Bianca asks Denise if Lucas will let her have her wedding reception at the community centre; and Bradley surprises Stacey with Becca.
