Shobna Gulati has revealed that her teenage son has been the subject of racist bullying.

The actress, who returned to Coronation Street in December following a three-year break, said that 14-year-old Akshay has been targeted because his father is from the West Indies.

Gulati, 43, told BBC Asian Network: "I would be lying if I'd said he hadn't been subject to racism. He's a very tall boy and he sticks out from the crowd.

"Racism exists everywhere no matter where you come from. It can be white on black or brown on black."

Gulati also revealed that she was bullied over her appearance as a child. "I've suffered from low self-esteem for as long as I remember. When I was a girl they used to call me 'Stick Insect' and 'Daddy Long Legs'," she said.

The star added that she has now come to accept her appearance and intends to age gracefully. "My body is 43 and let it be 43," she said.
