As Neighbours hits a 25-year milestone, executive producer Susan Bower promises new sets, a new logo, new faces and storylines that will keep viewers glued to their screens. We preview these changes and all the drama coming up in 2010...
Neighbours turns 25 in 2010 - what big plans do you have in store to mark the milestone anniversary?
We're calling it 25 years young because we feel we've got at least another 25 years left in us. We'll be celebrating the whole year, starting from the first episode back. We'll have new titles and a new logo and we'll be throwing a big party at some time during the year. We're still at the planning stage, but there'll be a television special about the show and our 6000th episode will also air.
Will we see any famous faces returning?
Yes, but I can't tell you who they might be.
Is anyone leaving the show?
Not in the first six months of the year, but a main couple will break up, and with that will come a shocking scandal.
Are any new actors joining the cast?
Yes, we have some really interesting new characters joining the show. Summer Hoyland is coming back - she's played by newcomer Jordy Lucas - and Libby finds love with someone new who won't get her parents' approval. But he is very hot!
Will there be any new families arriving in the street?
We're established with our families for now, so there won't be any new ones in 2010. There will be new residents though.
Will anyone die?
No, but a lot of people will certainly be hoping that someone on the street dies!
What sort of relationship will Paul have with his long-lost son Andrew?
There's a lot of friction there. Paul feels guilty that he really betrayed this child by not being there. Andrew is the bad seed, but he's come looking for the father figure he always wanted. Unfortunately they're like two peas in a pod, and while Paul disapproves of his son's bad bahaviour, he kind of likes it too - the fact that he's such a chip off the old block. And that causes terrible friction in the household because Declan lives there too, and he and Andrew loathe each other. The Brady Bunch it ain't going to be!
What about Zeke's new love interest, Mia?
Mia (Alicia Bonaddio) is 18, hot, smart, loves dance music and is always eager to meet new people and have a good time. But her breezy demeanour hides a passion for serious topics like climate change and, in particular, animal rights. A young woman of principles, Mia is willing to do whatever it takes to fight the good fight.
Will there be any other surprises?
One character will be caught up in a growing web of lies, a new teen will leave a lasting impression and there'll be a wedding that not many people want to happen. In the second half of the year, there will be a major shock.
What about natural disasters, explosions or shootings?
At this stage we don't have any plans for any big disasters as we're so hamstrung by the 6:30pm timeslot. We're not allowed to show blood or distress, so what we like to focus on - and what Neighbours does best - is showcase relationships between people. That's why it's called Neighbours.
Are there any new sets?
Yes, there will be some new sets in 2010. For the first time in a long time, we have two generations at school. Declan, Ringo, Donna and Kate will be going to university, so we need a new set for them to "play" in. Then we have the Year 11 kids, Andrew, Summer and Harry, while Callum and Sophie will be in Year 7. Some old sets may get a spring clean too.
What about babies...
Hmmm... without giving too much away, there's the definite possibility of a birth next year. The characters get up to all sorts of mischief so anything could happen!
