Some of you older members may remember that about two years ago I appeared on Eggheads...well, along with my wife we recently applied to go on Pointless. We had an audition, at which they told us that less than 10% of the people who apply actually get on the programme. However, we were contacted yesterday and told we will be filming our programme on 18 January...
Now to do some revision on what obscure films the likes of Angelina Jolie and Hugh Grant have been in!
If anyone can remember any of the film stars or pop stars they used in the first series I would be grateful to know as it will save me looking them up as they won't use them again...I shouldn't think!
Congratulations on a successful audition :cheer:
I have not seen the first series but will look out for this one. Sorry I can't help with previous questions.
What is Pointless? Can't say I've ever heard of it.
It is a quiz show where you need to score as few points as possible and get obscure answers. It is a BBC show, I don't know more than that at the moment

It was on during the late summer and autumn.
It's a bit like Family Fortunes in reverse.
It starts with five couples who are asked a question like name a film that Tom Cruise has been in. 100 people have already been asked (like Family Fortunes) but this time the idea is to get the answer no-one has thought of. If for example you say "Top Gun", it is likely that something like 80 or 90 people would have said Top Gun, so you get say, 90 points. If you can come up with an obscure film that none of the 100 thought of you get 0 points. The winning couple is the one who gets least points. Each round the couple with the highest score is knocked out.
The final round, when just one couple is left is different. You have to choose a subject from three given and you then have to give three answers. If one of them is pointless, you win that day's jackpot, which rolls over if it's not won - like Eggheads. It is very difficult to win the final as even if just one person out of a hundred has said the answer you give you don't win. So you have to think up something really really obscure!
There are different categories like films, music, television, politics, sport, history, literature, geography, flags, words and so on.
I was really addicted to the show when it was on, which is why I applied for it.
Oh yes, one round for example was name the Mitchell characters in Eastenders. So you had to name anyone who was a Mitchell by birth or by marriage. I think the top three for which you would have got lots of points were Peggy, Grant and Phil, but, of course, they were the ones to avoid.
Maybe they'll have the Barlows or the Dingles when I'm on!
P.S. One other thing I should have added is that if you give an answer that is completely wrong, say giving the name of a film that Tom Cruise wasn't actually in, you get 100 points.

We lost! But I won my head to head against CJ. Another one in our team beat Chris. So we had 3 against 3 in the last round. We got our first two right and then got our last one wrong, which was something like, "What form of communication is the word courriel in French? email, fax or parcel" We thought email and fax were fairly universal so we went for parcel, but it was email. Before Dermot told us whether we were right or not he asked the Eggheads and they agreed with us. But they edited that bit out. We knew the answer to their last question, so if the last two questions had been the other way round we would have won £10,000. But I'm not bitter about it. Grrrrr!!!!

Good Luck, I remember you from Egg Heads. Please let us know when we can watch you again. Oh and could you please try for Deal or No Deal, I love that one.
Hi Parkerman,
Were you on today?......Or are you still on standby....?
I hear that the Jackpot was £10,000 rolled over from the first series......

Thank you for your good wishes.
But we didn't get on yesterday. We were on standby as it all depended on the result of the first show they recorded; they record two a day. We arrived at 12:00 and went through all the pre-recording instructions, make-up, clothes selection and quick rehearsal etc. The first show started recording at 3:00. If one particular couple won then we would have been needed for the second recording, due to start at 7:00 (For those of you who've never seen the show, all contestants get two opportunities. There was one couple who were having their first go out of the four teams, so if they'd won they wouldn't come back which is when we would have gone on. The other three couples were all having their second go, so win or not they would all be leaving, so there were already couples ready to take their place. I hope that makes sense!)
Anyway, at just gone 4:00, the couple we were relying on returned to the Green Room. Not only did they not win, they were the first couple to be knocked out! The producer told us we wouldn't be needed but asked us if we could wait till 7:00 in case, for some reason, one of the other couples couldn't go on. So we waited till 7:00 and then left, getting home at about 9:45. It was a jolly nice day out and we did get a reasonable lunch and dinner out of the BBC. So we are now back to our original date of 18 January.
For those who have watched the show before I should add that they have changed the format. The first round is as before but with only four couples instead of five. The second round is completely different. Now what happens is that after Alexander asks the question seven alternatives come up on the screen; one is pointless and one is incorrect; the other five have scores varying between 1 and 99, so you have to choose one of the seven. The second person has the same question but seven different possible answers. The third round (the head to head) now consists of Alexander asking a question with each couple just giving one answer. The winner is the one whose answer scores the least. This is done until one team scores three points (i.e. best of five). The final is the same as before.
The jackpot at the start of the new series was £8750 rolled over from the last series. (Edit: Just to clarify. This means the amount up for grabs for the first show was £9750 as they add £1000 each show like Eggheads.) The show we would have been on was the third in the series.
Hi Parkerman,
Thanks for the info on the new format......
The second round sounds a bit "Unfair" since it is a BIG advantage in going first......
However, I guess when the second contestant gets up to the podium the order is reversed.
Seeing that there are only three couples left at that stage, then your team will either be going 1st and then 3rd or 2nd and then 2nd or 3rd and then 1st.....
Hi Parkerman......
Are you all ready for Monday......?

Yes...except that they are now not sure they want us after all!
Apparently, so they say, they have had a lot less couples winning on their first attempt than they expected, which means they don't need as many couples as they planned for. We are, even as I type, waiting for a phone call from the assistant producer to say whether we are needed or not. 18 January is the last day of filming for the next series.
Aww, I was looking forward to seeing you in that show. Won't be the same without you now :( I never know any of the contestants, was hoping to sit there and think: I know lots about him :D

sadly I received the phone call last night to tell us we wouldn't be needed as they have not had as many first time winners as they anticipated. :(
The assistant producer said that IF a third series was commissioned they would contact us again, but they don't know yet whether it will be.
Awww, sorry Mr p. :( But keep going for auditions for game shows, might see you on one of them yet :D

I am feeling sooooo frustrated now! I saw the first Pointless today and we would have got to the final (with two extra Pointless answers on the way, putting up the prize to £10,500). We would have taken the same category as they did (poets) and I would have said two of the Pointless answers. We could have been £10,500 better off by now!!!
Mind you, having said that, it was the third programme we would have been on, so we wouldn't have been on the first one anyway. I suppose that helps a bit, but I think I shall have to stop watching it.
Could have would have should have.....
Awww, such a shame, parkerman.....:(

BBC One will also have a new Saturday night series with a celebrity version of its popular quiz Pointless. It will continue to be hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman.

Unfortunately pal playing the game at home doesnt have the same stress levels as playing for real in a studio environment. I love quiz programmes and always manage to get the most obscure answers from my dim and distant memories but i reckon if the pressure was on then my memory would let me down

As you know I was on Eggheads and I actually felt no pressure at all. I feel absolutely confident that I would have given the answers in the studio that I managed at home.
