Anyone doubting that 2009 has belonged to US music need look no further than the Grammy nominations, which have just been released. British artists have been roundly snubbed in virtually all the major categories, with Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa and Kanye West heading the field with multiple nominations. Quite frankly, it's difficult to present much of a case for any of our main British exports, other than Susan Boyle.

"I Dreamed A Dream" has just charted at Number One in America, setting a first-week sales record for a female debut album and we can presume she may well be a prize-winner in 2011. However, next January's bash will see only veteran rockers Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood anywhere near a big prize, in the best rock album category. Elsewhere, Depeche Mode, The Ting Tings, Pet Shop Boys, Elvis Costello and Imogen Heap are nominated but will surely struggle to wrestle very much attention from their Transatlantic rivals. Coldplay, for example, are unlikely to set the world on fire by winning best video. As for Robbie Williams, well he's nowhere to be seen.

In fact, it looks certain to be a stars'n'stripes extravaganza at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 31, when the battle between Beyonce, Swift and West is resumed. The trio have ten, eight and six nods apiece respectively, suggesting cutlasses will again be drawn following the rapper's infamous stage invasion at the MTV VMAs in New York earlier this year. Surely not even Kanye would be daft or drunk enough to go charging up the red carpet if Swift triumphs against his mate Jay-Z's wife again in the Song Of The Year category?!
