Neighbours star James Sorensen has spoken out in support of his character's new romance plot.

The 23-year-old's alter ego Declan Napier will be seen sharing a kiss with Kate Ramsay (Ashleigh Brewer) on Australian screens next week.

Sorensen has admitted that the storyline could prove controversial among fans who supported Declan's relationship with wife Bridget (Eloise Mignon) before her death earlier this year.

Speaking to TV Week, the actor commented: "It's a difficult situation. Declan was truly in love with Bridget. He was one of the lucky ones to have found his soul mate early in life, but at the same time, he has to move on and live his life.

"A lot of people do think it's too soon for another relationship. But I can assure you that it's done very tastefully."

On Declan's reaction to the romantic moment, Sorensen said: "He feels as though he's cheated on Bridget and that he hasn't mourned for long enough to be able to move on without showing proper respect to the love of his life. He's left confused and upset."

Mignon quit her role as Bridget in order to concentrate on pursuing a degree at university.

HEARTBROKEN Declan Napier will find love again with gorgeous brunette Kate Ramsay.

The teenage dad, who is coming to terms with losing wife Bridget Parker, tries to deny his feelings for the feisty student, above.

But as their friendship grows fans of the Aussie soap will see Declan finally start to move on from Bridget’s death.

A Neighbours insider said: “Kate was orphaned when her mother died, so like Declan she too has suffered enormous grief.

“It takes them a while before things start to develop. But in the end a relationship will come out of their close friendship.”

Neighbours star Ashleigh Brewer has revealed that she expects viewers to accept her character's forthcoming romance with widower Declan Napier.

In the New Year, British fans will see the actress's alter ego Kate Ramsay acting on her growing feelings for single dad Declan (James Sorensen), who lost his wife Bridget (Eloise Mignon) in a car accident. The scenes have already been broadcast in Australia.

Discussing whether the love twist could prove controversial among viewers, Brewer told PA: "I think they'll be okay with it... I think they'll be accepting. It's done very tastefully and very slowly. The two characters don't rush anything."

She continued: "I love it. James Sorensen is just amazing, and he and I are very close friends. The fact we knew we'd be working together a lot worked in our favour. It's lots of fun."

Sorensen has also backed the storyline, arguing that Declan needs to "move on and live his life" rather than mourning for Bridget forever.

Neighbours star James Sorensen has urged fans to give his character's new romance plotline a chance to develop.

The on-off relationship between the actor's alter ego Declan Napier and Kate Ramsay (Ashleigh Brewer) has attracted a mixed response from viewers in Australia in recent months.

Some fans believe that Declan is moving on too quickly following the death of his wife Bridget last year.

Responding to the criticism, Sorensen told TV Week: "We were expecting that. The Bridget and Declan relationship was built on so much foundation. There was a lot of time invested in it and it ended so suddenly. But viewers will see that it's really not an easy choice now for Declan. He struggles so much with it and he doesn't want to move on.

"I do think the audience will learn to accept this new romance. I'd like to tell them to hang in there and give it a chance."

i like the building relationship between them

Sorensen has previously praised the plotline's 'tasteful' tone.

I think compared to H&A, Neighbours have handled this well and have not rushed Declan into a relationship
