Former Coronation Street star Sean Wilson has reportedly claimed that the soap is being produced "on the cheap".

The 44-year-old, who played nurse Martin Platt on the ITV1 drama for two decades, apparently suggested that bosses are paying the price for mistakes which have been made across the board in the TV industry.

Wilson is quoted by the Swindon Advertiser as saying: "Television has shot itself in the foot at the moment. It has spent a lot of money on the wrong things and has to now make things on the cheap, or in a reality show format.

"It's fair to say Coronation Street has had to take that route, but I had a lovely 21 years there."

The actor, who was axed from the Street in 2005, has been concentrating on a new career as a cheesemaker in recent months.

Asked if he has given up on securing TV roles, he replied: "Not at all. If you are out of showbusiness for a while agents just don't ring you as much."

Well, David said last night that he would love for his mum to get back with his dad and there is a vacancy for a husband for Gail coming up soon, so I would love to see him come back. I reckon he could sort out young David too if he was around again

I thought that the whole point of soap operas is that they are made on the cheap?

Of course. She is a ''National Treasure''

If she is being paid by the inch she must be Britains highest paid soap actwess
