View Full Version : Roy Cropper (David Neilson)
UNLIKELY Corrie criminals Roy Cropper and Ken Barlow are arrested by drugs cops.
Roy (David Neilson) and Ken (William Roache) are mistakenly caught up in a police sting in scenes to be aired in August.
Meanwhile the show’s Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) dons a nun’s habit for the latest Corrie DVD special.
This will be fun to watch

Good to see that Roy and Kelly have made up. Can't wait to see what Blanche has to say about those two being arrested.
The cast and crew of Coronation Street took to the streets of Manchester again yesterday for yet more on-location filming. This time, the scenes involved Roy Cropper (David Neilson) and Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) being arrested in a drugs raid. Sound crazy? I thought so, too, but rest assured it's a complete misunderstanding.
Roy finds a package which has been left in the café and decides to take it back to its owner. Roy and Ken arrange to deliver the packet and as they're approaching two dodgy-looking youths, they're ambushed by undercover cops, arrested and dragged to Weatherfield police station for questioning.
Becky (Kat Kelly), meanwhile, finds the whole thing highly amusing when she goes to pick them up. What would Hayley say?
 Lol this will be funny

 i'll bet she does!
and i always love it when they go out into manchetser, its so weird seeing them in the 'real world' and i bet its even funnier with Roy!
Coronation Street's unhinged entrepreneur Tony Gordon (Gray O'Brien) begins scrambling for survival next week when Roy Cropper - played by David Neilson - reports him to the police for murdering Liam Connor last year. However, in a shock storyline twist at the end of next week, Tony follows Roy to the banks of the canal and pushes him into the icy water to ensure his secret remains just that. Will Tony get away with murder for a second time? Or will Roy's persistence finally pay off? We caught up with David Neilson again to talk about Roy's involvement in Tony's demise.
What did you think when you were told that Roy was to become embroiled in the Tony saga?
"As an actor or someone who's interested in stories, I just knew it was a great story because there are so many bits to it. Roy cannot lie - he's got a real problem - he just can't cope with anything that's not black and white, that's not nailed down and it bothers him. He can't push it to one side so it will bother him and haunt him. Funnily enough, Tony Gordon has the same traits but in a much more psychopathic, single-minded way. Roy starts to get inside his head and become Tony's conscience because Tony doesn't have one. Roy becomes fascinated by how this guy's mind works, it's almost an academic thing. When Hayley wants to call the police, Roy doesn't want to because he doesn't want them to ruin his fun! Roy becomes obsessed, until he realises they're threatened."
What does Tony do to them?
"Tony Gordon's getting to Roy and Hayley and he becomes much more threatening towards them that they get scared. Tony threatens to 'sort out' Roy, then threatens Hayley. At that point, Roy decides to go to the police. They also decide to get out of the way for a while to be safer. When they return, the police have taken Tony away but unbeknownst to Roy and Hayley, the police don't have enough to hold him so he's been released. Maria finds out that he's suspected of killing Liam and his world starts to unravel."
There are some great scenes coming up between Roy and Tony beside and in the canal. How do they come about?
"It goes back to the bats again. They think Tony's safely locked away and Roy gets a phone call from this chap from the conservation society saying that some pipistrelles have been spotted under these arches near the canal and because it's November, it's unheard of. The guy wants Roy to do half an hour by the canal to keep an eye out and fill out the log. He doesn't want to go because of Hayley but she says it's fine so he reluctantly goes. Unbeknownst to them, Tony Gordon's broken into the cafe because he has a key so he overhears their conversation about the bats so he knows where Roy is. With that, he approaches him by the canal. He has a knife and when Roy asks him about Hayley, he grins and implies that he's done something terrible to her. Roy loses it and really charges at him. They go tumbling around but Tony's younger and fitter and Roy can't swim - he gets him on the edge of the water and Roy says, 'I can't swim', and he says, 'Good', and pushes him in."
What does Tony do when Roy's gone to the canal?
"Tony walks away and leaves Roy to flounder and actually drown because he goes right to the bottom. He watches Roy disappear from the bridge. He goes very calm and walks away. To Tony, it's the end of his problems."
Did you do your own stunt?
"Yeah, I did most of it. It was cold, it was late at night - 2 o'clock in the morning - it was only chest deep but knee deep in... I don't like to think! It stank and you had to go under the water and let the water settle, then come up. I had to be under for about four or five seconds. It wasn't scary because it's all very controlled and you do it by numbers, you know what's required. You literally get your head down and do it, then it's over. We had to film a bit more because although the real canal is chest deep, the Weatherfield canal is much deeper than that and he sinks to the bottom, so we went to this huge tank up in Fleetwood to do the underwater stuff."
I caught up with Coronation Street's David Neilson again to chat about Roy Cropper's involvement in Tony Gordon's (Gray O'Brien) demise. Click here to read what he had to say in the main part of the interview.
But why is Roy so popular with viewers? Will Roy and Hayley ever foster again? And will the pair ever take Graeme (Craig Gazey) under their wing? Read on for more...
Why do you think the public have taken Roy to their hearts?
"I think it's because he's like a lot of people - that doubt and that trying to battle through life. He's honest, he does his best, and he's got a nice relationship with Hayley. I think also they're funny. It helps that there's humour in their lives but there's also a very serious side. I always think there's this little dark cloud that follows Roy around. If it was raining in one spot it would be over him. He's like Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh - something dreadful is going to happen to him.
"He doesn't have any humour himself but he's got particular obscure interests but he cares about the right things. He's rigorous in the way he deals with life and if something doesn't satisfy him, he won't be fobbed off with an excuse and accept it. He has to worry it out and he will get himself into a lot of trouble when it would have been much easier to lie or forget it."
Are there any plans for Roy and Hayley to adopt/foster again?
"Well they've got Becky in a way. They're probably getting a bit old for it, but any waif and stray that comes through Weatherfield ends up with Roy and Hayley. They seem to have this adopted daughter in Becky, though. She always ends up back with them and that relationship came from Hayley going off to Africa. Roy's relationship with Becky is great - they're two oddballs. She's very streetwise and Roy isn't but she's very naïve in lots of other ways where Roy is wise and has a lot of knowledge and integrity. He's not going to exploit her and he's not at all predatory. It is a father-daughter thing."
You you like to see Roy and Hayley take Graeme under their wing?
"I don't think Graeme needs taking under a wing - he's more likely to take them under his wing! We enjoy working together. I enjoy him coming in because I think Roy finds him a bit odd and that's very funny."

Coronation Street's Roy Cropper is to be arrested for assault.
The beloved ITV soap character, played by David Neilson, is to snap after weeks of being tormented by a local gang and will lash out at an intruder who breaks into his café, the Daily Star newspaper reports.
After hearing someone moving around in Roy's Rolls, he takes a bat downstairs and begins swinging wildly at the burglar, who he is shocked to discover is neighbour Gary Windass (Mikey North).
And despite Gary having broken into the café to steal cash from the till to pay for his child's Christmas presents, Roy is overcome by guilt and pleads with the judge to send him to jail after he's charged with assault and given 100 hours' community service.
Roy says: ''The legal system has proven that it's totally inadequate.
''It's not right at all, there was a security guard charged with actual bodily harm and got a 10-month sentence. I've committed a violent crime, I deserve to be in prison.''
However, Roy's neighbours are to jump to his defence, insisting Gary got what was coming to him.
Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) says: ''Roy is a decent bloke. If Gary hadn't been breaking in this would never have happened.''
Busybody Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) adds: ''That lad has been nothing but trouble.''

This is a bit out of character for Gary. His child is so young he would be happy with a little inexpensive gift or not bothered if he did not get anything at all.

Perhaps this is to give Gary a new storyline
by revisiting the stress he suffered after
military service and blaming his actions on
that.
Also make him even more unacceptable to
Alyas family !

Coronation Street's Roy Cropper will finally reach a turning point in the New Year as he scatters his late wife Hayley's ashes.
David Neilson, who plays Roy, was spotted filming the poignant scenes out on location in Manchester yesterday (December 3).
Paparazzi photographs show that Roy will scatter the ashes at the boating lake where he and Hayley shared their first kiss.
Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) will both join Roy in order to pay their own respects to Hayley.

Roy scatters Hayley's ashes
The scenes hint at a fresh start for Roy, as he previously planned to scatter Hayley's ashes in Blackpool two months ago but was unable to go through with it.
Roy didn't feel ready to let go of Hayley when he paid a visit to the seaside resort in October, but it seems that he will be in a different mindset when these scenes air in early 2015.
Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn has previously confirmed that fans will see Roy on "an upward path" next year, but not before he experiences a difficult Christmas.
Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn has revealed more about the new friendship coming up for Roy Cropper.
After a difficult year, Roy looks likely to reach a turning point in a future storyline as he gets his own allotment and strikes up a bond with a new female character.

David Neilson as Roy Cropper in Coronation Street
While romance isn't on the cards for the popular café owner, viewers will see him back to his old self after a year of grief for his late wife Hayley.
Blackburn told Inside Soap: "Roy meets a widowed lady over on the next allotment. She's not going to be a love interest, but someone who Roy will feel obliged to help guide through the world.
"We know how nervous Roy is around people he doesn't know, so the fact that he's able to come out of his shell and offer real, redemptive support to a complete stranger is a sign that the Roy we all know and love is back."
Blackburn also promised that there is much more to come for Tracy Barlow's feud with Carla Connor, which intensified with Rob Donovan's arrest late last year. Obviously Tracy saves her from the crash then !
He said: "Tracy blames Carla for losing Rob and that will always be at the back of her mind. We have a story coming up where Carla will unknowingly take something away from Tracy that she holds dear.
"In Tracy's head, it'll be the last time Carla ever does that. Remember, Tracy's killed before and got away with it."
Coronation Street continues at 7pm tonight (January 21) as the show's mini-bus crash storyline continues.
I'm sick of this feud between Carla and Tracy! Enough is enough.

I'm sick of Tracy....
Mind you I was sick of her about five minutes after Kate Ford first opened her mouth back in 2002.
I'm glad Roy's getting a new friend that'll help pull him out of his grief, but I must say that his grief hasn't really come across on screen to me. I expected much to be made of Roy's distress after Hayley died - he is after all the type of person who can't cope with change - but a few weeks hiding away with his trains and the occasional scene are all we've got.
Needless to say I blame the writing and not David Neilson.

I like Roy's scenes with Carla, they should build that friendship more
Coronation Street café owner Roy Cropper will fall out with Sharif Nazir in an upcoming storyline.
David Neilson and Marc Anwar, who play the characters, were spotted filming an argument while working on location in Manchester this week.
Future episodes will see the pair forced to share an allotment, but it's far from a happy partnership when they can't agree on how to use the patch.

The argument continues
Roy and Sharif end up splitting the plot in two, but it looks as though their comedic bickering could still last for a while.
Despite the early tensions, Roy's hobby will ultimately mark a turning point for him as he starts to move on from his difficult year.
In a recent interview with Inside Soap, Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn confirmed that Roy will meet a troubled new character while working on the allotment - giving him something new to focus on after a year of grief for his wife Hayley.

Roy rescues Cathy
Roy Cropper proves to be a knight in shining armour in next week’s Coronation Street when he comes to Cathy’s rescue.
The hoarder is left trapped and unconscious when a pile of boxes suddenly come tumbling down on top of her.
When she fails to turn up for the curry evening she had agreed to attend, Roy gets concerned and heads to Cathy’s house to find out what’s happened.
Realising she’s trapped, Roy breaks the door down and rescues her from the pile of debris before pointing out that her house is a potential death trap.
He decides to take matters into his own hands and while Roy persuades a reluctant Cathy to have a day out with him, Tyrone, Fiz and Chesney kindly clear some junk out of her house.
When she gets home she hits the roof to see all her junk has gone but Tyrone assures her they haven’t dumped it and shows her how they’ve boxed it all up and labelled it so she can decide what to dump and what to keep.
Cathy’s touched, revealing how after Alan’s death, hoarding junk gave her comfort and admits to Roy that she’s scared that the longer she stays in the house, the worse she’ll become. Sympathetic, Roy makes Cathy an offer...

Coronation Street will wave goodbye to Roy Cropper next year - but don't worry, it's just for three months.
Fan favourite David Neilson is currently gearing up to film a surprise exit from the role of Roy, as he's asked for time off to take on a theatre role.
Neilson has signed up to appear in a production of Samuel Beckett's Endgame, which will have dates in Glasgow and Manchester in early 2016.
The project will involve a Coronation Street reunion for Neilson, as his former co-star Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow) will also be starring in the play.
A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed that the soap's team were happy to grant Neilson the time off as he shared his plans well in advance.
This allowed writers and producers time to create a suitable exit storyline to explain why cafe owner Roy won't be around for a while.
Brooke Vincent and Les Dennis, who play Sophie Webster and Michael Rodwell respectively, will also be taking time off from Coronation Street next year after landing theatre jobs of their own.
Endgame will run at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow between February 4 and February 20, before moving to Manchester's HOME Theatre for more dates from February 25.

Coronation Street Spoilers: Roy Cropper in grave danger this Christmas? But who’s having a festive fling?
The cast of Coronation Street have of course already filmed the episodes we’re going to see airing over Christmas this year, given that the show films around six weeks ahead of broadcast.
And it was while filming some of those scenes that the Daily Mirror’s photographers spotted David Neilson and Melanie Hill – who respectively play the roles of Roy Cropper and his love interest Cathy Matthews – featuring in a shocking plot twist…
In images on the newspaper’s website, we see Roy dragging Cathy out of her smoke-filled house after a fire threatened to trap her inside. But could Roy put himself in grave danger by going back in to the inferno?
Well, of course, that’s entirely speculation, however, as David is due to leave the show on a sabbatical in the coming months, it could well be that this storyline will feature in his exit plot.
However, back to the fire scenes, and the newspaper’s article adds, “Things will take a turn for the worse when it emerges that Cathy is actually the cause of the fire.”
So while that may leave Roy and Cathy’s relationship on the rocks, elsewhere, love is set to blossom for Eva Price and Aidan Connor, and, as we’ve previously reported, for Kevin Webster and Anna Windass.
Of Anna’s new love interest plot, Debbie Rush – who of course plays the role of Anna – told OK! magazine, “[Anna] will start out by having a Christmas that’s very dull, but it turns out to be very merry when an unexpected invitation to Sally and Tim’s house leads to a close encounter with Kevin Webster!”
Meanwhile, Catherine Tyldesley, who plays Eva, commented, “The thought of Christmas depresses [Eva] a little bit because she’s single…
“But actually, things take a bit of a positive turn and there’ll be a lot of heavy flirting between Eva and Aidan.”
And it seems all this new-found love will be set to flourish while Coronation Street is transformed into a winter wonderland, which comes about after Tyrone – who can’t afford to pay for a trip to Lapland – insists that this Christmas must be the best little cancer sufferer Hope has ever had.
roy leaves to help look after his mother sylivia
That makes a sensible exit for him. I thought that too as they have conformed Cathy is staying
He’s been a big miss from our screens of late but fans of Roy Cropper don’t have to wait much longer to see him again as his first scenes are set to air at the start of May.
Roy left to look after his mum Sylvia as actor David Neilson took some time out to star in a play but the star recently returned to filming and was spotted filming on location with his colleague Melanie Hill for new Roy and Cathy scenes.
The pair are seen embracing on a park bench as they reunite, indicating that their relationship is going from strength to strength.
Melanie was sporting grazed knuckles and cuts to the face and we are to assume that this will form part of a storyline although no details are currently available on what may have taken place.

With Roy’s return episode airing on Monday 9th May, fans can also breathe a sigh of relief that he will be back before Carla Connor departs Weatherfield.
The pair’s close friendship since the death of Roy’s wife Hayley has been a hit with fans over the last couple of years and many had been left fearing that they had already shared their final scenes together.

The much-loved cafe owner is set to find happiness again when Cathy Matthews gets down on one knee for him
Cathy Matthews and Roy CropperCathy Matthews and Roy Cropper have struck up a close relationship in the last 12 months
Coronation Street character Roy Cropper is set to find happiness again by remarrying – two years after the tragic assisted suicide death of wife Hayley.
And The Mirror can reveal in a change from tradition Cathy proposes to Roy and he eventually says yes.
A Corrie source said: “Roy had to deal with the death of Hayley and had very tough and emotional storylines for months so writers felt he needed a happier 2016.
“He and Cathy have been getting on brilliantly and so she decides to take things to the next level and gets down on one knee.
“It is a bit of a shock to Roy and some of the others on the Street but viewers will be pleased to see him have some happiness back in his life. He is a much-loved Corrie character and although no date has been set, it looks odds-on that this will be another big soap wedding.”
If he goes down the aisle with Cathy, it will be the third wedding for Roy, played by actor David Neilson.
In 2003, he was forced to marry Tracy Barlow in a bid to adopt her child with Hayley. The marriage to scheming Tracy was eventually annulled.
In 2010, with a change in the law he formally married Hayley in a lavish ceremony.
The pair met in February 1998 and instantly had a connection.
Like him, she was shy and naïve but they had a lot in common. However, after an intimate dinner, Hayley told him that she was a pre-operative transsexual, born male but assuming the identity of a woman.
Roy reacted badly, rejecting Hayley and becoming depressed but after realising he had made a mistake their friendship continued until Hayley left to have a sex change in Amsterdam.
Roy began missing her and tracked her down to the houseboat where she was living. Hayley was touched and decided to return to Weatherfield. They moved in together and Roy soon proposed to Hayley, who had to tearfully decline, due to her legal situation.
He met Jessica Lundy, the temporary curate for St. Paul’s Church, and after some deliberation, she agreed to marry them. The church ceremony was due to take place on 21st April 1999, but was ruined by Les Battersby, who had tipped off the press.
David Neilson has been in Corrie since 1995, with Melanie Hill joining as Cathy in April 2015.

Nice news, and glad that Roy's back soon! :)
ah roy too soon for a wedding
Coronation Street welcomes back one of its most popular characters next week, as Roy Cropper returns to the cobbles with a bang.
Roy has been absent from Weatherfield since January, as David Neilson took time out from the role in order to appear in a play with former co-star Chris Gascoyne.
The much-loved café owner has been away in Hastings looking after his mum Sylvia after she broke her hip, but it's time to reclaim his rightful place at Roy's Rolls next week now that she's back on her feet.
There's certainly a few surprises in store for Roy when he arrives back - the first being a new coffee machine that has been installed in his absence.

Roy tries to help Cathy
© ITV
That's the least of Roy's worries, though, as he and his partner Cathy Matthews soon hear an almighty crash coming from upstairs - caused by Alex Warner (Liam Bairstow) and his drunken mates having a party in the flat.
When one of the out-of-control lads breaks an ornament, Roy completely loses it and throws them all out - before angrily ordering Cathy and Alex to pack their bags.
While Roy wouldn't usually be so harsh, it's a difficult day for him as it's Hayley's birthday and he's clearly struggling with having so many changes in his life.
Carla Connor (Alison King) later spots that Roy is upset and urges him to make his peace with Cathy before it's too late.

When Roy returns home and finds that Cathy and Alex have already packed their bags, he apologises for his outburst and asks them to stay after all. But how easy will it be to get things back on track?
Coronation Street airs Roy's return on Monday, May 9 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.

Hayley and Roy also had differences and it was not all plain sailing. When people pass you tend to forget the bad bits. She used to get really frustrated with him sometimes. I know they loved each other

That's very true, but Hayley and Roy just seemed to fit - I'm feeling less and less sure that Cathy and Roy do. She was cruel to him (and Alex) last night. I know she'd had a big shock and we tend to take our frustrations out on those we love, but her behaviour felt like too much and was unpleasant to watch. She just doesn't seem to get Roy.
I'd like to see Cathy and Roy split but Alex stay living with him. I think the latter make for odd but pleasing house mates.
Totally agree Dazzle, the Alex and Roy relationship is working well. I dislike the continual manipulation of Roy by Cathy and Anna. I recall some while ago several soap boarders commenting as to why the rush to get Roy paired off, particularly after the unique relationship he had with Hayley. Roy is a strong enough character in his own right to carry all types of storyline , as proven in the past , doesn't need a partner. Time for Cathy to move on or move out.
Agree they do not suit each other now.

Since reading this post yesterday Glen, I've been thinking about your mention of Cathy and Anna in the same breath.
It's happened so slowly that I didn't notice, but the once nervy, uncomfortable in her own skin yet intelligent Cathy has slowly morphed into a clone of the brash and ignorant Anna! How on earth did this happen, and why do the Corrie team think the sensitive Roy would remain in love with such a woman?! :wall:

Even Tyrone who is not the brightest can see Roy does not love Cathy and is settling
Coronation Street spoiler – Roy Cropper’s shock panic attack
Roy Cropper is a nervous wreck in next month’s Coronation Street as it’s clear he’s not keen on marrying Cathy Matthews.
And matters get even worse for him when her mouthy sister Nessa shows up on their door and sparks a series of rows with Cathy.
Feeling the pressure, Roy breaks out in a rash and Cathy realises the pressure of their wedding is getting to him so she calls it off, much to his delight and the rash disappears.
However, later in the week she admits she still wants to marry him and Roy feels under pressure to fulfil his promise to make her his wife.
With the wedding back on the pressure mounts on Roy and he suffers a shocking panic attack, forcing him to run out of the cafe.
Brian and Tyrone corner Roy and demand to know if he had a panic attack because he’s feeling trapped by the wedding.
They follow him up to his flat where, faced with their badgering, he finally admits he doesn’t want to get married but won’t break his promise to Cathy.
In despair, Brian and Tyrone hit Roy with some home truths but is it too little too late?

Yes, I think he definitely would have. He was determined to keep his promise to Hayley (which was an unexpectedly moving touch).

I think many of us would agree with the following insightful article about Roy (except perhaps for the comment about Eileen and Anna's everywoman appeal :p):
Coronation Street: keep Roy single! He should never have been with Cathy in the first place
David Brown welcomes the wedding drama that saw Roy and Cathy break up
http://images.radiotimes.com/namedimage/Coronation_Street__keep_Roy_single__He_should_neve r_have_been_with_Cathy_in_the_first_place.jpg?qual ity=85&mode=crop&width=620&height=374&404=tv&url=/uploads/images/original/125208.jpg
Nobody wants to see Roy Cropper left lonely, but I honestly believe that his break-up with Cathy Matthews in tonight’s Coronation Street is the best thing that can have happened to his character.
This evening’s double bill saw Cathy call off their wedding after realising that the groom-to-be had big concerns about their future. But, to be honest, I’ve been doubtful about their pairing from the off.
Now, I’ve nothing against Cathy. If written for with enough skill and subtlety, she could have the same everywoman appeal as an Eileen or an Anna. But putting her with Roy was always a mistake. For the main reason that nobody should now be a love interest for Roy.
http://www.radiotimes.com/uploads/images/original/125210.jpg
Following the death of Roy’s soulmate Hayley, there was talk from Corrie bosses that the café owner wouldn’t be rushing into another relationship. That Roy was a one-woman man who would be forever faithful to Hayley, the woman who it had taken him all his life to find.
And yet, after little more than a year, he’d met up with fellow allotment owner Cathy, a grieving widow with whom he began a friendship and – very soon after – a relationship.
It felt that Corrie had bottled it when it came to Roy’s future. Instead of taking the opportunity to explore Roy’s ‘otherness’ and inability to connect with those around him, the show instead set him on the all-too-typical path of soap romance.
The storyliners chose plotline over characterisation and – in the process - stretched our credulity to breaking point.
Once Roy became invested in Cathy, we had no end of mediocre cliffhangers: the discovery of the extra-marital affair of her late husband Alan, Cathy getting trapped under clutter in her living room, plus a road accident outside the corner shop.
None of it rang true. Because what we should have been seeing were Roy’s struggles as a bereaved man trying to cope without the love of his life.
Just think about the potential that was lost. Roy Cropper – a man who was originally introduced as a rather scary loner. But who eventually found happiness with the similarly socially naïve Hayley. And who - even in the face of her death - rarely lost that closed-off, emotionally controlled demeanour.
http://www.radiotimes.com/uploads/images/original/125212.jpg
By putting Roy with Cathy, a lot of what made him so singular ended up becoming conventional. He morphed into something almost cosy, his idiosyncrasies in danger of being ironed away. The type of melodrama being handed to Roy could have been served up to any number of lesser Weatherfield residents we could all name.
At times, I honestly began to think, ‘They just don’t know how to write for Roy anymore’.
If you recall, Corrie was very quick to have Roy do his suffering off screen following the death of Hayley. The character went missing for a number of weeks, presumably to give actor David Neilson a break following months of heavy storylines. And it was around this time that the rot originally set in.
Once Roy returned, it soon became apparent that Corrie didn’t really know how to handle a man who determinedly refuses to bare his soul, no matter how extreme the misfortune he suffers. ‘Quick – give him a new love interest’, the soap’s chiefs must have thought, ‘it’s the only possible way that we can have Roy move on.’
But it was a betrayal of all that had gone before. Roy is defined by being a loner, as was Hayley. And the fact that they were together so many years doesn’t make him any less of a loner. They were just two loners against the world.
So by hurrying Roy into this union with Cathy, it was almost as if Coronation Street was minimising the momentousness of him getting together with Hayley in the first place. The generous view is that Hayley gave Roy the confidence to embark on a fresh relationship. But my feeling is that Corrie just didn’t know where else to go with him.
Until now, that is. Because Coronation Street has at last recognised that Roy and Cathy should always have been a non-starter. Tonight’s final shot of him picking up the wedding ring under Hayley’s photograph and putting it back on his finger was a sure sign that Roy wants to remain true to his late wife’s memory. And I couldn’t be happier.
But the big question still remains: what do you do now with Roy Cropper? If you can’t give him a partner (and my feeling is that you definitely shouldn’t), then where does he go next?
Well, for me, Roy is always at his best when he has a waif or stray to care for. He needs someone in the mould of Fiz, Wayne, Chesney and Becky to influence.
And even though he’s never been the most demonstrative of men, more time needs to be invested in Roy’s friendships. Thankfully, the reappearance of Brian Packham (his one-time axing being another mistake that Corrie has chosen to unpick) has the potential to fuel many a future Roy-centric storyline.
http://www.radiotimes.com/uploads/images/original/125209.jpg
He could also do with a good cause to rally round. Nothing becomes Roy more than the sight of him with a placard in his hand surrounded by a pack of unlikely demonstrators. Perhaps when Toyah Battersby resurfaces, that could also be addressed.
But for now, I’m just glad that Corrie has extricated him from a relationship to which he was never really suited. Romantic entanglements are ten-a-penny in soapland, but a character as unique as Roy Cropper – well, that’s priceless. Let’s not cheapen him again.

Not sure if I like the idea of Roy being in a fight but at least they are allowing him to have his own storylines rather than just being an advisor to other characters, notably Carla. I love their friendship but it's good to see him interacting with other characters too. He has a long history on the Street and worked with Gail in the cafe so it's good to see his friendship with the Platt family being explored again.
In the list of headlines I assumed I would never write, Roy Cropper being arrested by police on suspicion of dogging was right up there with the most ludicrous. But the pictures speak a thousand words – Roy is in a spot of bother. Of course, not everything is as it seems, this police officer has his mind in the gutter it seems. Toasty and warm in his ITV Studios jacket, the busybody copper notices that the windows of Roy’s car are steamed up. Inside, Roy and his companion Evelyn Plummer are looking shifty and so the officer joins the dots and creates a very sordid picture.
https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/sei_36571281-f773.jpg?quality=80&strip=all&zoom=1&resize=644%2C450
If you cast your mind back to other pictures from location filming we shared, you will recall that Roy and Evelyn will find themselves on a mission to track down her beloved pooch Cerberus, who has been dognapped.
https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/sei_36572051-e24a.jpg?quality=80&strip=all&zoom=1&resize=540%2C658
Roy and Evelyn are in the car staking out the house of the suspected thief so the only dogging they’re truly interested in is her canine friend. But that’s not as easy to explain as you might think and Roy is mortified to be confronted and asked to step outside of the vehicle.
https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/sei_36571576-9f94.jpg?quality=80&strip=all&zoom=1&resize=540%2C735
And it looks like he might be actually facing indecency charges, having already been collared by the police for trying to scale fences with Evelyn. Who’d have thought Roy would be such a menace to society? This collection of pictures shows David Neilson and Maureen Lipman enjoying a laugh while filming the comedy sequence.

David Neilson has reportedly left the role of “Roy Cropper” in Corrie for a period of time ... the reasons and length of absence have not been disclosed as yet.
The Roy’s Rolls cafe owner’s “leaving” storyline has been revealed that he will have to make an emergency visit to look after his mother, who will have suffered a massive heart attack. But it’s not known if the character (Sylvia) is going to live or die this time. You may remember a similar storyline saw Roy leave the street for a short while last February.

The project will involve a Coronation Street reunion for Neilson, as his former co-star Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow) will also be starring in the play.**

He already has 3 half siblings on his father's side so they don't really need to introduce another sister for him. Having said that, I'm looking forward to finding out who this mysterious person is. I just hope they don't re-write his backstory like they did with Tyrone - deciding that Sylvia wasn't his mother or his father wasn't his father, for example.

I am quite sure that Sylvia was his real mother but agree with you that it would be silly if the Tyrone storyline would be repeated .. but a sister by Sylvia might be different to half brothers by his father ..... I would say lets see :)

I liked Sylvia
I liked her too - she brought out different aspects of Roy's personality and revealed a little more about his childhood. I know she was a nosy old battleaxe by that point but it can't have been easy raising a child like Roy, especially after her husband left.
A new sibling for Roy would be interesting. They could be similar to him, giving him someone to share his eccentric hobbies with. Or they could be the complete opposite and find him weird and embarrassing. The second option would allow for more conflict and drama, but I'd be happy with either.
Looks like his friendship with Carla is entering a new and more difficult phase as she covers up for him. I don't think he'll be happy about it when he finds out (and he will find out - this is Corrie after all..).

Roy Cropper suffers heartbreak yet again as he discovers he has a long-lost brother - then finds out he’s dying.
While going through the possessions of his late mum Sylvia, he learns she had an affair, gave birth in secret and then gave her son away.
After months of intense research Roy, played by David Neilson since 1995, finds out his half-brother is called Paul.
But then when he finally meets him, he delivers the bombshell news.
A source said: “It’s a cruel twist for the much-loved character, as he was so thrilled to discover he has more family after losing his mother.
“It was particularly hard for him to deal with as he’d already had to cope with his wife, Hayley, enduring a terminal illness.”

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/a38437278/coronation-street-roy-cropper-shock-return/
Coronation Street's Roy Cropper made a surprise exit from the cobbles in November, as he climbed into the back of a taxi and set off for the airport, bound for a new job in South America.
Many fans were devastated to see the soap stalwart leave his beloved Roy's Rolls behind, apparently for good, but it has now been reported that Roy could be making a shock comeback sooner than expected.
Actor David Neilson, who plays Roy, has already been spotted back on the set of the ITV soap after taking a short break, and it's claimed that he will be part of a "dramatic storyline" over the coming months, The Sun reports.
Viewers had seen Roy's guilt over lying to the police about the events of Super Soap Week mounting, after he stopped Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) from shooting Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) and agreed to cover for her in the face of police questioning.
Already battling with his conscience over the lie, Roy was further stricken when he learned that the gun Abi abandoned was the same one used to fatally shoot Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac).
Feeling that he couldn't remain on the street any longer, Roy asked Abi to sell his car and signed his flat and caf? over to niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher). Despite the best efforts of his friends to convince him to stay, Roy remained determined to leave Weatherfield behind.
After saying a final goodbye to a heartbroken Nina in the caf?, and ignoring her pleas for him not to leave her, Roy set off for South America, where he had secured a new role feeding conservation workers.
Since Roy's exit, there has been no on-screen hint of his return but Corrie has also not confirmed that fans have said goodbye to the much-loved character for good.
Actor David has also remained coy about his future on the cobbles, recently telling Inside Soap: "There are two exits in this for me: one for the character and one for David. Hopefully they won't coincide ? maybe they will.
"I know Roy leaving will get a reaction. It's a big part of your life and a big part of that popular culture. He will be remembered for a long while."
https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/a43566118/coronation-street-roy-cropper-health-scare/
Coronation Street is set to air a mystery health scare for cobbles favourite Roy Cropper.
Roy has frequently clashed with Evelyn Plummer this year, most recently when Evelyn blamed Roy for the death of her beloved dog Cerberus.
But in upcoming scenes, Evelyn will find herself worrying for her friend's health, after he starts experiencing some worrying symptoms during a salsa class.
After Evelyn persuades Roy to accompany her to a salsa class, she and Glenda realise they have their work cut out for them. But as the salsa lesson gets underway, Roy admits he doesn't feel well and clutches his chest before hurrying out of the room.
Later Evelyn goes to the caf? and chides Roy for abandoning her mid-lesson. But he reiterates that he felt unwell, though refuses to say more about his symptoms, causing Evelyn to leave disgruntled.
After the salsa incident, Roy attends an appointment with Dr Gaddas and describes how he has been suffering from chest pains and breathlessness. Dr Gaddas tells Roy she'll arrange for some tests to see what's going on.
But when Evelyn finds out about Roy's health worries, she insists on accompanying him to the hospital.
Previously, fans of Corrie have speculated that Roy and Evelyn's relationship could eventually turn romantic, thanks to their on-screen chemistry.
But recently actress Maureen Lipman, who plays Evelyn, shut down the speculation: "I don't think Evelyn has the hots for Roy, or him for her. It's lukewarm at best and I don't think she's going to get her vest off.
"But there are many forms of love ? they're lonely people. She had the chance for romance with Arthur and sort of blew it. I think the stable door is shut and the horse has bolted. She does want to spend time with him [as] Roy understands about grieving. He gets where she's coming from ? [it] doesn't take much to bring her round because she knows where her bread's best buttered."
i hope he isn't leaving permanently
https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/a46782359/corrie-roy-cropper-court/
Coronation Street has been filming Roy Cropper scenes in court.
Thanks to paparazzi photos taken from the soap's set, which feature actor David Neilson arriving in court, we're now wondering what exactly his Weatherfield character has done to justify his surroundings.
Calum Lill was present too, as Roy's solicitor Joel Deering, while it's also confirmed that the Roy's Rolls owner will be supported by his niece Nina Lucas and friend Carla Barlow throughout this storyline.
For now, though, it's just mere speculation as to why Roy finds himself here. He has previous with protesting; could something have happened involving Nina? Has he been falsely accused of committing a crime?
One possible direction is the disappearance of Lauren Bolton; in upcoming scenes, Bobby Crawford reveals to Lauren that he knows all about her O-Vidz account, leading her to clam up.
Speaking to Bethany Platt later on, Lauren confesses to being skint and suggests she could sell her far-right brainwashing story to a magazine. At the caf?, Bobby searches for Lauren only to be told that Roy has let her go. Roy heads to her flat with her wages, where she thanks him while revealing her plans to start afresh away from Weatherfield.
Bobby then lets himself into Lauren's place after noticing the unlocked door. There's no sign of her, though, so he sends Lauren a text before leaving. Bobby later admits to Max Turner that he's concerned about the missing Lauren.
Will Roy be summoned by the court to provide a chronology of events?
https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coronation-street/a60060952/coronation-street-spoilers-roy-cropper-lauren-arrest/
Coronation Street's Roy Cropper is arrested next week as Lauren Bolton's disappearance becomes a murder investigation.
The ITV soap launches a big new storyline as the police realise there's more to Lauren's mysterious absence than meets the eye.
Lauren was last seen on Wednesday, February 21 when she told Roy that she was planning to leave Weatherfield for a fresh start. Roy was the last known person to see Lauren safe and well.
Bobby Crawford paid a visit to Lauren's empty flat shortly afterwards and became suspicious over her fate when she was nowhere to be seen.
Next week, potential traces of blood are spotted on the curtains at Lauren's old flat and the police start treating the case as a murder inquiry, led by DS Swain.
Vicky Myers, who plays Swain, told Digital Spy: "Roy ends up in the frame because Swain interviews Bobby and there are certain elements of that conversation that raise suspicion.
"Then Swain goes ahead and goes to interview Roy. Because of his honesty and slight vulnerability, she sees that he's almost too good to be true.
"It's quite cynical, as she's suspicious over Roy's support for Lauren and she wonders: 'Do people really genuinely go and help someone and be generous towards them like this?' It raises suspicion and it goes from there, really.
"There is evidence to support the theory. Once Swain and Tinker go to Lauren's flat, they're made aware that there's potentially some blood on the curtains.
"Scenes of Crime Officers are brought in to investigate and it's confirmed ? and there's also human tissue. So it escalates into that, really."
A few days before these worrying discoveries, Roy cleans the flat as a favour to Evelyn Plummer, who was sub-letting the property to Lauren.
This sparks suspicion that Roy could have been trying to clean up the crime scene for his own sinister reasons.
Vicky continued: "Swain doesn't know Roy and she doesn't care about Roy. Regardless of what anyone else says to her about him, she deals in facts and she's got to get to the bottom of this.
"Swain very much sees herself as 'the victim's voice'. So she's working at it from Lauren's perspective. She wants to know what's happened to her.
"Regardless of what anyone else says about this much-loved character on the Street, she doesn't care about that. That's of no interest to her whatsoever."
Roy is arrested in scenes airing on Friday, March 15 as Swain makes him the prime suspect in the police's investigation.
Asked whether Swain believes she has her man or if she has doubts, Vicky replied: "The evidence is there to suggest it. But I think for Swain, she's never met anybody like Roy before and it makes her feel quite uncomfortable.
"But it's not really for her to decide. Swain's job is to collate all of the evidence, corroborate everything and pass it onto CPS and then court. So she's just got to do her job and make sure she can get enough evidence as she possibly can.
"Regardless of what other people are saying and if they're championing Roy's corner, that's her job and she takes it seriously."

Coronation Street has revealed further details of Roy Cropper's sad prison story, as he continues to face suspicion over the disappearance of teen Lauren Bolton.
After Lauren suddenly vanished earlier this year, Roy has been accused of her murder, and scenes later this week see him being taken into custody following an incident with a woman posing as Lauren's mum.
Things will take an even darker turn in scenes airing on Monday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 17, as Roy remains in police custody. After he and his solicitor Dee-Dee Bailey take their seats in the police interview room, Roy asks Dee-Dee for a piece of paper and an envelope and begins to write.
As the court hearing gets underway, the CPS barrister paints a picture of Roy as a murderer with a violent past. Much to Roy's dismay, they go into detail about his previous brushes with the law, including his assault on Gary Windass and historic abduction of foster child Wayne Hayes.
Later on, Nina Lucas, Evelyn Plummer and Carla Barlow await Roy's bail hearing. When Dee-Dee hurries over and hands Nina a letter from Roy, the trio are forced to fight back tears when they realise that Roy is convinced he's going to prison.
Unable to face sitting through the hearing, Evelyn heads back to the caf? to check on dog Freddie instead.
Back at the court, Dee-Dee presents her case and urges the judge to grant Roy bail. Sadly for Roy, the judge refuses the application and orders that he be held in custody until his murder trial arrives.
The next day, devastated Roy sits in his prison cell and turns away his breakfast, before refusing to leave the cell.
How will Roy cope in prison?
Roy and his loved ones have faced increasing amounts of pressure over the past few weeks following the public outcry against Roy.
This week sees Stu Carpenter attacked when he tries to investigate Lauren's disappearance himself in an attempt to clear Roy's name, while Roy's friendship with Sam Blakeman is also put under pressure when Sam is forced to lie in order to spend time with Roy.
Actor David Neilson has spoken out about Roy's devastating storyline, saying that his character is worried about the fact that "everything he does or says is being misinterpreted and he doesn't really have a voice".
