Ricky Gervais has been announced as the host for January's Golden Globe Awards.

The 48 year old British comedian will be the first official host of the ceremony since 1995.

Gervais, who has made several films in Hollywood, said: "I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down."

Paul Telegdy, head of alternative programing at NBC which will broadcast the ceremony said Gervais, who is also a stand-up comic, "has provided some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent history."

Winners of the Golden Globes are often considered frontrunners for the world's top film honors, the Oscars.

Nominations for the 67th annual Golden Globes will be announced on December 15 and handed out in Beverly Hills on January 17.

The daughter of Alfre Woodard and Roderick Spencer has been named Miss Golden Globe 2010.

Mavis Spencer, 18, has been selected to present the statues at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles in January.

Speaking to ET Online, she said: "There's a long, rich history of people that have done this and when my mum approached me a couple of weeks ago and she said I had the opportunity to do this, I was really excited about it."

Golden Globe winner Woodard added to People: "I told Mavis, it's just like your grandma's cocktail party, find someone who is interesting and have a chat.

"She really is a Renaissance woman. She is a nationally ranked equestrian, she's a show jumper, she's a Shakespeare savant and she's a beautiful actor."

Other stars who have been named Miss Golden Globe include Rumer Willis, Melanie Griffith and Joely Fisher.

Nominations for the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced on December 15. The ceremony will be broadcast on January 17 on NBC.

X FACTOR legend Leona Lewis has been nominated for a prestigious Golden Globe award.
The 24-year-old's track I See You from sci-fi blockbuster Avatar is in the Best Original Song category alongside songs by Sir Paul McCartney and U2.

The US film and TV awards are traditionally seen as forerunners to the Oscars.

Londoner Leona, who won The X Factor in 2006, was asked to sing the song by Avatar's director James Cameron.

Her single Happy, used in the film Precious, has also been tipped for an Oscar nomination.

Sandra Bullock has revealed her surprise after receiving two Golden Globe nominations this morning.

According to People, the actress, who has previously said that her movies often go unrecognised, said that she was "beyond stunned" when she heard of her two award nods.

The 45-year-old is nominated in the best actress in a drama category for The Blind Side, and best actress in a comedy or musical for The Proposal.

On the subject of her fellow nominees, which include Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, Bullock said: "Just to be included in the company of these amazing women I have so admired through the years has left me slack-jawed with awe."

The ceremony for the 2010 Golden Globe Awards will be held in Los Angeles on January 17.

The cast of Glee have expressed their excitement after the show was nominated in four categories at this year's Golden Globe Awards.

The Fox programme earned more nods than any other show, including Best Television Series - Musical Or Comedy and acting recognition for stars Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele and Jane Lynch.

Speaking to The AP, Lynch said: "I slept through [the nominations announcement].

"I got up to six messages and went, 'Ah! I wonder if there is some good news for us?' And there was. My agent called me three times, and said, 'Why aren't you up?' So, yeah. I called my mum, and she said, 'The golden what?'"

Michele added: "I can't, I can't even believe it. My mother just said to me, 'When I get out of this shock, I will congratulate you properly.' I think when I snap out of this shock, I don't know when it is going to happen, but if someone here hears a scream somewhere in LA at any point, it is probably me finally realising what actually is happening."

The show's creator Ryan Murphy, who previously won a Golden Globe for Nip/Tuck, also admitted his excitement, joking: "I think I will be wearing Tom Ford, maybe. I think. And I don't know who my date is going be. I'm open. I need some calls. I need some bribes."

The 2010 Golden Globe Awards air on January 17. Glee returns to Fox next year.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly shunning this year's Golden Globes ceremony because Pitt did not receive a single nomination.

According to E!, Jolie's stylist Jen Rade said that Pitt has decided not to attend the awards show with Jolie because his performance in Inglorious Basterds was not nominated.

"They're not going because he's not nominated individually. Inglourious Basterds is, but not him," Rade said.

Inglourious Basterds earned four Golden Globe nominations, including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Director' for Quentin Tarantino.

The ceremony airs live Sunday, January 17 on NBC.

The cast and crew of Glee celebrated their win at the Golden Globe Awards by breaking into song backstage.

The Fox series picked up the trophy for 'Best TV Series - Comedy Or Musical' at the annual ceremony held in Los Angeles last night.

During an interview with The Insider, the stars celebrated their first Golden Globes win by singing 'Celebration' by Kool & The Gang.

When asked why the show had become such a success, star Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) said: "It has a lot of heart. Everyone can relate to it. It's about the outcast, it's the underdog and it's refreshing."

Creator Ryan Murphy had accepted the gong on stage, saying: "Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press and Ms Barbra Streisand... I would like to thank all the wonderful people who actually thought a musical would work on primetime television."

He added: "This show is about a lot of things, it's about the importance of arts education and this is for anybody and everybody who got a wedgie in high school."

Glee returns to Fox on April 13.
