Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan has become the face of the Vodafone Foundation's World of Difference UK programme.

The 22-year-old, who plays Weatherfield's Tina McIntyre, is fronting the mobile phone company's campaign, which will allow 500 lucky applicants the chance to take up a two-month paid placement with a UK charity of their choosing.

Vodafone will donate £2,500 to each successful applicant's chosen charity as well as a mobile phone and pre-paid credit.

Speaking of the initiative, Keegan said: "I just hope that it will get more people involved with charities because it helps your local community really. It's about helping people get together and making a difference to your community."

She added: "I have always been involved with charities - I used to do voluntary work for a veterinary centre and the Salvation Army working at a homeless shelter. It's about finding something that you are interested in whether that's people related and get involved, something that is personal to you and has affected you."
