Coronation Street's Gary Windass is to join the Army in a forthcoming storyline, according to a report.
The Weatherfield bad boy makes the surprise decision after mocking Remembrance Day poppies in a future episode, The People claims.
It is thought that outspoken Gary, played by Mikey North, sees the error of his ways and sets off to the Army recruitment office when Ted Page (Michael Byrne) rebukes him for making jibes about servicemen who lost their lives in war.
A source said: "Producers are braced for a flood of complaints about his sick attack on those who have given their lives. But Ted's response sets Gary thinking and he completely changes his views after a visit to the recruitment centre."
The insider added: "Corrie has always reflected real-life issues and this is one that touches many families today."
Gary first appeared on screen in November last year and has since served time for burgling Audrey Roberts's home.
