President Barack Obama has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

The 48-year-old politician was named as the 2009 recipient of the prestigious honour by the Nobel Committee in Oslo this morning.

In a statement, the group said he had won because of his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," it continued.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee drew specific attention to Obama's work in strengthening international institutions and his efforts to promote nuclear disarmament.

Obama, who took office in January, is the first US president to be awarded the honour since Jimmy Carter in 2002. Former vice-president Al Gore received the prize in 2007.

He will be invited to collect the award on December 10 in Oslo.
