THE "husband" divorced by Little Britain star Matt Lucas ten months ago hanged himself yesterday.

Kevin McGee, 32, who wed the comic in a 2006 civil ceremony, left a suicide note on FACEBOOK.

It declared: "Kevin McGee thinks death is much better than life."

Tormented McGee was found hanged at his flat by cops who dramatically broke in at 8am.

The 32-year-old TV producer had posted his despairing message on the social networking website three hours earlier.

The tragic ex-husband of TV star Matt Lucas blew most of his £2million divorce payout on drugs and booze, pals have revealed.

Heartbroken Kevin McGee, 32, fled the London home he shared with Matt weeks after their split, which they announced in June last year.

He bought a three-bedroom bolt-hole in Edinburgh but friends say the TV producer’s life spiralled out of control as he struggled to cope with the break-up – the first celebrity gay divorce after civil partnerships were introduced.

The pair are said to have split over Kevin’s refusal to kick his cocaine habit, despite a stint in rehab and desperate pleas from Little Britain star Matt, 35.

But he became increasingly hooked on the Class-A drug as Matt’s career continued to blossom and he found happiness with a new man.

By the time Kevin hanged himself early on Monday morning, pals said he was struggling to pay bills and could barely afford credit for his mobile phone.

He left a suicide message on Facebook saying: “Kevin McGee thinks death is much better than life.”

Student Chris Gimby, 18, who lived next door to Kevin, said: “We invited him out a couple of times for a few drinks and he was one of the nicest guys ever.

“I guess he was just lonely. He got a dog a few months ago and I’d see him walking it a couple of times a day.

“The police were banging on his door in the morning. The last time I saw him was a month ago on a night out.


“He would introduce himself as a kids’ rep. But I never saw him working or going to work. It’s just so shocking.”

Another distraught friend added: “He had hit rock bottom and was taking a lot of drugs to keep going.


“He felt his life was over. We heard that much of his money had gone on drugs and a carefree lifestyle.”


Devastated Matt was last night being comforted at home by pals including fellow Little Britain star David Walliams, 38, and TV favourite Dale Winton, 54.


Telly presenter Davina McCall, 41, yesterday sent Matt a message on Twitter saying: “Hello, it’s Davina here.


Someone on Twitter told me you were having a tough time so I’m sending you a hug.” Friends say stricken Matt has been “destroyed’ by the death and he has pulled out of the West End play he was starring in, Prick Up Your Ears.


The stage show tells the story of the tempestuous love affair between gay playwrights Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell, which ended in their murder/suicide.


One close friend said: “Matt is inconsolable. He loved Kevin dearly but they couldn’t be together. They were too different in too many ways.


“Of course Matt is full of ‘what if’ questions but he has an amazing group of friends who have rallied around him. They’ll get through this together.”


The pair married in 2006 at Home House, a private members’ club in central London. Guests including singer Sir

Elton John, 62, chat host Paul O’Grady, 54, actress Barbara Windsor, 72, and rocker Courtney Love, 45, joined the couple for a lavish pantomime-themed party afterwards, dressing up as their favourite story book characters.

Kevin was said to have got a dissolution settlement of almost £2m from Matt when they split.

Matt Lucas's former partner left £1m in his will, say reports.

According to the Daily Star, Kevin McGee - who was found hanged in an Edinburgh flat last year - left the cash to his relatives, but not Lucas.

The pair, who married in 2006, split two years later which apparently led to McGee's struggles with depression.

McGee committed suicide last October. He was a TV producer.
