what jumped out to me is that the wife hid upstairs while all this was going on.. Is that not strange... your husband and more importantly your baby is been attacked, would you just hide? ... I would have been down there to get my baby and get the feck out, then call police!!
We all react different when we are scared and in shock. Would she have got past three violent attackers to get the baby anyway or would she also have been stabbed and maybe even die? She might have thought the baby to be in a different room, not actually being held by her husband at the time of the attack.
possibly.. but for me my first instinct would be to get the baby.. regardless of whether i knew my partner had him or not.. maybe that is just me

Murderers, robbers, whatever, just trying keep me away from any of my kids if I thought they were in danger!!
Her first priority should be her baby - maybe she knew this was going to happen?
All they stole was a watch
It's also been reported on BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/8280604.stm) with slightly different details.
The robbers were there for a reason, they wanted jewellery and money. Yes the woman should maybe have protected her child better but everyone reacts differently to violence. Her husband was cut ten times by three men, who obviously knew what they were doing. Who knows what they would have done to her and the child had she gone downstairs and picked him up.
Abigail, a mothers first instinct is or should be to protect her child.. as moonstorm said, it shouldn't matter how dangerous they were as long as your protect your child..
i dont know what the woman was thinking. As other people have said if it was me the first thing would have been to get my baby. I wouldnt care what they did to me, my baby is more important
How much use do you think you would be to your baby with a knife stuck between your ribs?
How much use do you think you would be to your baby with a knife stuck between your ribs?
You don't think like that.. you think I have to get my baby safe and the cost to you is not even something that enters your head...
It might have done with this mum
To be fair we do not know this woman's history.
For all we know she was battered as a child and reacts automatically to stressful situations by hiding. People are shaped by their experiences.
I agree that if anyone threated my child nothing would stop me from trying my utmost to protect him, or perhaps what I should say is that I hope that is how I would react.
I am lucky that my bravery has never been tested.

If it was me I don't care what danger I put myself in I would do all I could to protect my child and I would use anything against the robbers chairs, an iron, sweeping brush anything.
