Their marriage has become completely toxic and they need to break up.

He definitely went too far, and Whitney also went too far with the incredibly cruel things she said to him. I don't think Lee's a domestic abuser in the usual sense; I think he lashed out uncharacteristically because he's at the end of his tether. Is that forgiveable if he gets treatment and it never happens again? I don't know...

It's soooo frustrating that still nobody understands that Lee is ill!

One thing I do know is that this storyline is a very good and believable depiction of a marriage falling apart under the strain of depression (and the partner's lack of understanding of it).

I think it's best not to forgive violence as it can get worse and very dangerous.

Yes I agree. When I questioned whether Lee hitting Whitney was forgivable I really meant in an objective sense. I don't think Whitney should forgive him and take him back because there's no way to know whether it was a one-off or whether it will escalate.

I wouldn't be against her forgiving him but refusing to contemplate living with him again until he's had professional help, but as I said I think they should break up completely. I agree with Shirley that their relationship is seriously unhealthy.

Lee Carter's downward spiral bottomed out tonight on EastEnders as he left his wife Whitney on Valentine's Day.

Months of secrets, betrayal and outright violence came to a head in the soap's gloomy holiday special on Tuesday (February 14) when Lee (Danny-Boy Hatchard) did a runner during a romantic dinner.

The day started off on a genuinely happy note, when Lee surprised his wife with jewellery and even made plans to take her out for a meal to celebrate.

However, Lee was called away to the Queen Vic by dad Mick (Danny Dyer) - who wasn't as forgiving about Lee slapping Whitney during a heated row last week.

"You hit the girl. You hit her - it's not right, it's not normal," Mick insisted. "If you really love her, you'll do the best thing you can for her - and you'll walk away."

That's exactly what Lee ultimately decided to do. During their Valentine's Day meal later in the episode, Lee slipped away leaving Whitney to pay the bill.

When she returned home, Whitney discovered that all of Lee's clothes and possessions were gone. She also found an envelope containing Lee's wedding ring and the worst Valentine's Day card ever.

The heartbreaking note read: "I'm sorry, I just don't love you anymore."

It was a sad end to Walford's most dysfunctional marriage - but is it actually the final appearance of Danny-Boy Hatchard as Lee Carter?

We know that Lee Carter is definitely leaving the soap, although he's hinted that a comeback in the future isn't out of the question.

"I feel it's the right time for me to leave," he told the Daily Star earlier this month. "But it's bye for now, not forever."

He disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

Well, at least until Danny-Boy Hatchard decides he wants to return.

I like to think he gets a mention about his whereabouts at some time ... for Whitney´s sake alone, never mind parents and siblings
