Sophie Webster is set to become addicted to crack on Coronation Street
Sophie Webster has had her fair share of dramatic storylines on Coronation Street but her latest is set to be one of the most controversial.
Troubled Sophie Webster will start taking Class A drug crack in one of Coronation Street's most controversial storylines in its 52-year history, which is likely to spark a major public outcry due to drug scenes airing in the show's 7.30pm and 8.30pm slots.
A show insider said: “This storyline would be one of the most shocking the soap has ever tackled, and there is a real fear among some of the crew that it could be too much for some of the more traditional viewers.
“For many people Coronation Street remains a national institution and long-term fans love the portrayal of working-class life in a northern town. Scenes such as these are likely to be far too edgy for many.
“As well as the older fans, families sit down to watch Corrie together with their children next to them and these scenes will air well before the 9pm watershed.”
Sophie – who split with her lesbian lover Sian earlier this year - will get hooked on crack after returning character Ryan Connor introduces her to drugs.
Ryan – the adopted son of Michelle Connor – is going to have a "damaging impact" on a number of young characters in the show when he comes back to Weatherfield for the first time since 2010.
The insider added to The Daily Mirror: “Ryan returns after spending two years in Glasgow, where he has picked up some alarming traits which he quickly passes on to Sophie.
“He comes back as a very dark character indeed and is set to have a damaging impact on several of the soap’s younger characters.”
