Corrie online service on the cards?

Coronation Street fans could pay to view alternative endings and previews on the internet.

ITV chief executive Adam Crozier revealed at the Royal Television Society international conference in London they were looking into "payment mechanisms" to see if Corrie viewers would be prepared to pay for extra content online, Media Guardian reports.

Crozier said ITV is starting to look at what could be charged for online, "whether for Coronation Street, looking at alternative endings, previewing certain things. We can test and learn from these things, we'll have to learn as we go along".

But he said "we'll not go down the News International route" and put all online content behind a paywall.

Crozier added: "ITV is free and things like Coronation Street are central to that strategy."

However, he said one of the things viewers might be offered is the chance to pay for extra content, such as "different endings" to storylines, as they happen in the show.

Several outcomes to big storylines are sometimes filmed to prevent what actually happens being leaked before it airs on the soap.

That would be cool to see alternative endings to episodes. Not too bothered about previews though. Wouldn't pay for it though.

The only slight problem with alternative endings is what happens to the storyline for people who for whatever reason decide not to watch the alternative ending.

It is totally absurd and ill thought out

I agree with you Alan. In a situation where a character either lives, or dies, for example; it seems a bit absurd to pay to see the alternative ending, when surely that can be left to the viewer's imagination.

Unless they plan to show a completely parallel version of Corrie, (not practical,) then there doesn't seem to be much point.... other than to use-up the discarded footage.

Might make more sense to put all their alternative endings on a DVD, like the "gag reels" and "extra footage" we get as "bonuses" to the films/tv shows we buy on DVD. Just a thought.
