MADONNA has cancelled one of the Manchester dates on her record-breaking global Sweet & Sour tour.

The American star was due to perform at the M.E.N Arena on July 7 and 8.

Promoters added the second date after tickets for the first sold out in minutes.

Tickets for the second night went on sale in early February, ranging from £65 to £175, but the 21,000-capacity venue has so far failed to sell out, so the date has been cancelled to allow more recovery time for a new show in Paris on July 9.

A spokesman for promoters Live Nation said: "Due to unprecedented demand by fans and some logistical scheduling issues, new dates and a few changes have been made to the itinerary.

"With record-breaking sell-outs in London, Brussels, Oslo, Tallinn, Helsinki and Gothenburg, Madonna's tour reaffirms her as one of the most successful touring artists of all time."

Ticket holders have been advised to return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

Madonna - who last week lost her bid to adopt a second child from Malawi - will perform tracks from her latest album Hard Candy alongside classics from her huge back catalogue and will be supported by DJ Paul Oakenfold.

It will be her third visit to Manchester following her 2004 appearance at the Arena on the Re-Invention tour and her 1984 British debut at the Hacienda.

The Sticky & Sweet tour came to Europe last year but did not stop in Manchester.

It is the highest grossing tour ever for a solo artist - beating the previous record held by Madonna's Confessions tour in 2006.
