Love,hate & tragedy.The road to romance has never been rockier than is in the Dales in 2008..
The rest of the world might be looking to the future as a new year dawns, but for the residents of Emmerdale, shaking off the past will prove all but impossible. Old resentments, new tragedies and the sins of yesteryear are going to affect the villagers' lives and loves this spring, with hard choices being made left, right and centre. But what spells bad news for your Dales favourites means plenty of fantastic drama for us soap fans to devour!
Sacred trust-
To those who don't know better, Paul Lambert and Jonny Foster look like the perfect couple. But as they continue to plan their wedding, tensions and trust issues threaten to destroy their romance. "Paul's convinced that Jonny is going off him," explains our spy. "His suspicions are going to make him paranoid and jealous, and could push Jonny further away. Is Paul right to worry?"
Can't buy me love-
Marriage is all about hard work, as Nicola De Souza is set to find out. With hubby Donald's miraculous recovery throwing a massive spanner in the works for the scheming gold-digger and her lover, David Metcalfe, nasty Nicola's going to have to play even dirtier from now on...
"Getting rid of her husband and claiming his fortune is all Nicola cares about," smiles our show insider. "Mind you, she's really met her match in Donald - and he'll be doing all he can to make her life hell and poison her relationship with David."
Sexy Lexi-
The sexual tension between Carl King and Lexi Nicholls has been simmering ever since their almost kiss towards the end of 2007. So it's no surprise that they'll grow ever closer. But can these two damaged individuals manage to find happiness together?
"Carl's become a very different man since he murdered his dad, Tom," whispers our source. "He's got a dark side, and so has Lexi. Sparks will fly, and it'll be interesting to see how Carl's ex - and Lexi's best mate - Chas Dingle will take the news..."
Son of Sam-
He's done his best to be a good dad and strike out on his own, but has Sam Dingle bitten off more than he can chew? With mounting debts and pressure from landlord Carl, Sam turns to his cousin Eli for help. That's the sort of move which could sink him for good, though.
"His son, Samson, is everything to Sam - and he just wants to provide for his little lad," says our mole. "But Eli puts Sam in a position where, if caught, he could lose the most important person in his life. Poor Sam's world will be turned upside down..."
No choice?-
Sam's not the only parent who's in an impossible situation. Carrie Nicholls has seen her relationship with daughter Scarlett sour after shock revelations about their family. But when a face from her past offers her the chance of a perfect future, Carrie is forced to decide whether to follow her heart or her head.
"Falling in love again is going to throw Carrie into turmoil," reveals our informant. "Should she turn her back on her one chance of happiness just to satisfy Scarlett? It'll be an incredibly tough call for her..."
Testing times-
Whatever's happening elsewhere in Emmerdale, you can usually rely on the joyful Thomas family to be full of smiles. However, Laurel and Ashley will face an awful tragedy in 2008 that threatens to tear them apart - and destroy their faith. Can they find the inner strength to look to the future? "This is the sort of nightmare that everyone dreads happening to them," sighs our source. "Laurel and Ashley have always seemed an unbreakable couple, but times will be so bleak that even they wonder if they can carry on. It's set to be heartbreaking viewing."
