After surviving yesterday’s kidnap ordeal, Inspector Gina Gold (Roberta Taylor) is short with Peter Harris (Peter Guinness) who has turned up at Sun Hill with a bunch of flowers for her – she doesn’t appreciate him coming to her place of work. Peter tells Gina he has left his wife and wants them to be together. Gina tries to brush him off and Peter is silenced when she tells him it’s over between them.

Meanwhile, PCs Lewis Hardy (Aml Ameen) and Roger Valentine (John Bowler) attend the scene of an assault. The victim, Simon Preston (Tim Scott-Walker), is taken away in an ambulance and DCs Jo Masters (Sally Rogers) and Terry Perkins (Bruce Byron) join the investigation. Jo interviews Simon’s wife, Hannah (Gina Isaac) whilst Terry tackles Simon’s best friend, George Gosse (Simon Merrells). Gosse tells Terry that Simon’s had a hard year - he lost his job and is now earning a small amount at a security firm. Back at Sun Hill, DS Stuart Turner (Doug Rao) plays the 999 call for Terry and Jo - the call ends abruptly when the operator asks the caller for more details. Through further investigation, Stuart soon discovers that the person who made the call was Freddy Patterson (Adam Farr) who has form for armed robbery. Freddy initially denies the assault but then claims he and Simon are mates, and after having a violent row, he called 999. At the hospital, Jo and Terry are surprised when a badly injured Simon tells them he doesn’t want to press charges as he doesn’t want to put his family in any danger. Hannah finally confesses to Jo that Simon agreed to help Freddy by giving him information about a security van’s route and Simon was assaulted because was going to change his mind. Jo and Terry decide to pay Freddy a visit and arrive just in time to see the Simon’s friend Gosse getting into a car with Freddy preparing for the security van heist…

Elsewhere, Gina and PCs Dan Casper (Chris Jarvis) and Reg Hollis (Jeff Stewart) respond to an emergency call where they find a barely conscious Lillian Cruft lying near a smashed window. Gina meets her fiancé, Carl Barker (David Acton) who reveals that Lillian has a heart condition and admits they argued that morning and is concerned this might have triggered her heart attack. Dan reports back from questioning the neighbours - a young girl was seen collecting for the youth club and CCTV shows Sally Ayling (Cloudia Swann), a serial shoplifter, near Lilian’s property at the time of the burglary. Gina, Reg and Dan continue the investigation and eventually discover the truth behind the pensioners’ heart attack…

Later, the brother of Lewis’ girlfriend arrives at the station shamefaced and admits he has been arrested. Rudy Niles (James Bellamy) explains he was caught with someone who was trying to break into a car and says his mate was just showing off. Wanting to help Rudy out and to set him on the straight and narrow, Lewis promises to talk to the officer who arrested him hoping he’ll get off with just a caution.

PCs Will Fletcher (Gary Lucy) and Diane Noble (Kaye Wragg) attend a shout at a nail bar where the owner, Stacey Jackson (Kirsty Mitchell) arrived at work to discover her new equipment had been stolen. Diane updates Detective Sergeants’ Phil Hunter (Scott Maslen) and Stuart Turner (Doug Rao) who have arrived to take over the investigation and Phil is amused to hear that Stuart, used to date Stacey and now she manicures his nails. Stacey confesses to Phil and Stuart that Lisa Bryant (Ursula Early), an ex-employee was sacked after attempting to pinch Stacey’s clients and set up her own business. Diane questions Lisa who claims Stacey neglected her business whilst she was wined and dined by her boyfriend Colin Bowden (Steve Swinscoe). Will arrives with some interesting CCTV which shows a man loitering outside the nail salon, then getting into a car registered to a Graham Conrad before driving off. Stuart speaks to the housekeeper at Graham’s address who explains that he has been away, but his driver, Colin, has permanent access to his car.

Phil, on a mission to find out the truth about Colin and Stacey, phones to book a manicure and he reacts badly when Stuart winds and accuses him of being unprofessional. Will and Diane are intrigued when Stuart ropes them in on a practical joke and conspire to photograph Phil having his nails done. Will and Diane appear at the nail bar just as Stacey is about to volunteer information about Colin. Phil is livid and Jack is unimpressed when he walks in to discover Phil and Stuart fighting in CID. Jack tells Phil that his reaction to Stuart’s earlier prank shows a complete disrespect for the job and Phil is stunned when Jack says the only way he’ll learn is to go back on the beat for a while – in uniform.

Elsewhere, PC Lewis Hardy (Aml Ameen) volunteers himself and Roger Valentine (John Bowler) to the task of sifting through paperwork and making calls in the hope of ascertaining information on the skull which was discovered a few weeks back. Roger is unimpressed and questions whether Lewis is following up the investigation to impress his girlfriend, Tash (Cascade Brown) as it was her younger brother, Rudy (James Bellamy) who found the skull.
