Simon Cowell has asked Louis Walsh to appear on the planned US version of The X Factor, according to a report.

The music mogul hopes that Walsh will agree to join the judging panel alongside Cheryl Cole when the show goes ahead next year, The Sun claims.

News of Cowell's US plans first hit the headlines yesterday with rumours that he had approached Girls Aloud star Cole for the series.

An insider revealed: "Simon is really keen on bringing The X Factor to America as it has been such a hit in the UK. And he is convinced that the Yanks will love Cheryl and Louis.

"He's made no secret of the fact that he wants to expand his TV interests around the world and this is one of the first big ideas he's got. It's early days but he hopes to get it on air next year."

Walsh has appeared in every series of The X Factor since its British debut in 2004. Meanwhile, Cole joined the show last year as a replacement for Sharon Osbourne, who quit amid rumours of a salary dispute.

Shouldnt Simon get American judges for this show or people who about the American Music Scene and American Market?

Cheryl is successful in a girlband in the UK only and none of Louis's acts have cracked the US

Thats what I think, I mean then the contestants and viewers will complain that they are pretty much unknowns to them, and yeah the market thing too

Cheryl Cole’s bid for stardom in the States has hit a stumbling block – they can’t understand her Geordie accent.

The Girls Aloud singer has been hand-picked by Simon Cowell to front a US version of X Factor.

Now American TV bosses – worried that Stateside audiences will not be able to understand her – are to screen X Factor tapes to US focus groups to see how big a problem it is.

It is likely Cheryl will be given elocution lessons to smooth the harder edges of her North East tones.

NBC executives jetted to Manchester to watch the Newcastle-born 26-year-old in action at the live auditions last weekend.

They loved her presence and down-to-earth charm – but couldn’t work out what she was saying.

A source said: “They were bowled over by Cheryl and thought she was sassy, smart, charismatic and beautiful. There was just one small problem – they couldn’t make head nor tail of her Geordie accent.

“She was at her best at the weekend – witty, empathetic and really encouraging to some of the acts.

“But while her accent isn’t that thick, the Americans really seemed to struggle with it.

“Simon jokingly offered to pay for elocution lessons for her but, seriously, that may be the route she has to take if she is really considering breaking into television over there.”

TV chiefs have now taken copies of last year’s show back to America with them.

They will play them to test audiences to see how well Cheryl goes down with the US public – and if they can understand her.

Simon, 49, is understood to be close to signing a deal for an American version of X Factor.

The multi-millionaire desperately wants Cheryl to front it, but she is tied into a contract with record label Universal and faces a clash of commitments.

When Geordie duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly filmed game show Wanna Bet in America, US bosses were so worried their accents would stump viewers they hired an interpreter.

The specialist listened on headphones and alerted producers by hitting a button if he heard something he did not understand.

Dec, 33 – born and bred in Newcastle, like Ant, also 33 – said their pronunciation of “our” proved trickiest for Americans.

But he insisted: “They weren’t completely in the dark – it only happened about twice in six shows.”
