A very good week for Emmerdale indeed:

Emmerdale trumped rival soap EastEnders in the ratings battle, as the two shows went head to head on Tuesday night.

The hour-long episode of the ITV soap was watched by 7.5 million viewers, while the BBC programme was seen by a peak audience of 5.2 million on May 14, reported The Sun.

But according to Bafta, Deadenders is STILL the best continuing drama/soap.... the viewing figures v Corrie AND Emmerdale tell a very different story.

as much as i champion emmerdale, lets not get carried away. 99.9 % of the year emmerdale is the third soap, behind eastenders which is usually second and Corrie in 1st place. if you are a soap fan and watch both eastenders and emmerdale, you are hardly likely to change over half way through.

eastenders is watched on iplayer, ofcourse there is the bbc 3 repeat, the bbc2 omnibus and the official barb ratings usually tell a different story, but its a nice victory for emmerdale all the same.

the baftas are a different kettle of fish. they are voted for by a panel and the tv networks submit an episode for judgement. the reason eastenders triumphed over the others is, it may be mediocre 99.9 % of the year but it does have stand out episodes and know body can do a reveal like eastenders. that is why it won the bafta.

in the scheme of things it dosent make eastenders a better show than emmerdale and it dosent help to address the problems it still faces. although im sure it will be a welcome bit of good news for lorraine newman.

p.s, the sun got its figures wrong, emmerdale got 6.8 million, eastenders 5.2 million. never trust a murdoch paper!!!

Looking at the other Bafta nominations and winners, the only reason Eastenders won is because it is shown by the BBC (who, newswise, have proved in recent times to be as untrustworthy as any Murdoch paper you care to mention).

if it was a choice between aunty or news international i know which i would choose.

to say bafta is biased towards the beeb is a bit like saying the ntas were biased towards itv. it isnt only the beeb who do well at the baftas, channel four also fares well. coronation street won the bafta in 2012, an itv programme.

Eastenders should watch Emmerdale and see how well they are doing with Rhona's drug addiction storyline, as much as I dont like the character Rhona the actress is playing the part of an addict very well
