Year in Brief 2008: 'Coronation Street'

It's been a rough ol' year in Weatherfield, so to celebrate the highs and lows of 2008, DS takes a retrospective look at the past 12 months on Coronation Street.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    January

Jim McDonald's brief return to Weatherfield was cut short in the first month of the year when he confessed his ongoing feelings to Liz (again) on the day of her wedding to Vernon. His son Steve, however, suggested that it was time for him to move on, resulting in Jim departing the Cobbles. Liz was left to pick up the pieces and patch her marriage together within 24 hours of tying the knot. During a ramble in the lakes with Maria, Liam accidentally fell from a cliff trying to save his dog, Ozzy, resulting in a mountain rescue. David's Christmas came slightly late as the feisty Tina McIntyre arrived on the Cobbles. Little did he know that she'd become the love of his life. And it was the end of a era when Street stalwart Vera passed away peacefully in her sleep. Jack, however, struggled to cope with the turn of events. Elsewhere during the month, Kevin was sentenced to a short spell in prison following his attack on John Stape over the festive period; Ryan discovered the identity of his biological father; and Terry made a brief return for Vera's funeral.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    February

February, the month of love, saw the will-they-won't-they wedding of Liam and Maria. After Maria saw Liam kissing his sister-in-law Carla, Maria was torn whether to go ahead marrying the man of her dreams. After a confrontation in the gardens of the venue, Maria eventually agreed to marry Liam, while Liam resolved that Carla would play no more part in his life. Violet, meanwhile, gave birth to her and Sean's child in The Vic. However, with Violet's feelings for Jamie bubbling under and Jamie's longing to be a father, Sean was left unnerved by their seemingly hidden agenda. Both Jamie and Violet later sped off in a car, leaving a devastated Sean behind never to see his child again. Elsewhere during the month, Jason and Becky gave in to temptation and spent the night together for the first time; Ryan and Michelle's biological son Alex came to blows; and Paul cashed in Jack's winning betting slip.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    March

The month of March saw David's girlfriend Tina discover that she was pregnant. After confiding in Gail, however, Gail persuaded and paid for her to have a termination, resulting in Tina and David breaking up. On overhearing his mother's deceit, David saw red and pushed Gail down the stairs, causing her to lose her memory when she regained consciousness. Elsewhere during the month, Chesney was taken into care but was later href="/soaps/a91340/fiz-and-chesney-move-back-into-number-five.html">allowed to return home after Fiz cleaned up the house; Paul set fire to Valandro's the Italian restaurant in the hope of cashing in on the insurance with Leanne; and Lauren revealed her bra to the Rovers' regulars.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    April

When David confessed to Gail that he pushed her down the stairs, he was shocked that she wouldn't report him to the police and ultimately ran riot on the Street, smashing windows and car windscreens, while Ken also became caught in the crossfire. He was eventually sentenced to six months in a Young Offenders' Institute on the day of Gail's 50th birthday. Meanwhile, Maria received some devastating news when Marcus suggested that she go for an ultrasound to check on the baby. Marcus, however, was forced to deliver the tragic reality to her friend that her baby had died and that she would have to give birth to a still-born. Liam, meanwhile, knew nothing of his unborn child's death. Elsewhere in the month, Tony asked Jason to smoke out the bats at his development site, much to Roy's annoyance; and Audrey met Gail's father Ted for the first time in years.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    May

After discovering the shocking truth about his unborn baby's death from the midwife, Liam struggled to come to terms with what had happened. Finally reconciling, the pair discussed funeral arrangements and finally laid their still-born baby to rest. In the wake of the funeral, Liam found himself torn between Maria and Carla. Later on, Rosie caught Carla and Liam kissing and recorded the moment on her mobile phone, realising the footage would come in handy at a later date. Elsewhere in the month, Tina's mother Anna and father Joe turned up; Harry and Liz shared a kiss; Paul left Weatherfield; a group of hoodies ransacked the Kabin; and Jerry collapsed with a heart attack.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    June

The beginning of the month saw Teresa lie to Lloyd that he was Finlay's father. She used the situation to her advantage and convinced Lloyd that he owed her big time and he handed her money. However, Teresa's lie was soon exposed when Jerry told Lloyd the truth. Meanwhile, Becky and Steve shared an unplanned night of passion which was soon rumbled by Roy. Elsewhere in the month, Steve was arrested for GBH; David was released from the Young Offenders' Institute; Liam sold his 40% share in Underworld to Tony Gordon; Liam's cousin Tom arrived; Lloyd told Michelle that Steve was planning to propose to her; and Liz shocked Vernon by announcing that their marriage was over.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    July

Tony Gordon's vision to expand Underworld was blocked by Kevin's stubbornness to sell the garage. Kevin flat out refused to sell the land, despite Tony's generous offer. Tony, however, decided to have the land surveyed, resulting in a boundary dispute. Tony, however, upped his game when he turned to Kevin's eldest daughter Rosie for help. Rosie was furious that her dad could think she was having an affair with Tony and so agreed to retrieve her father's business records so Tony could 'look over them'. Tony continued to make generous offers to Kevin, but he was adamant he wasn't going to sell up and tempers continued to flare. Meanwhile, Michelle was flabbergasted to discover that Steve wasn't planning on proposing, but felt obliged to since Lloyd had already mentioned it. Determined to make a fool of him, Michelle made sure she picked the most expensive engagement ring, before throwing it into a skip and chucking Steve out of the house. Elsewhere in the month, Becky moved into Eileen's; John returned to the Street; Tyrone and Molly got engaged; Tony introduced Jimmy to Carla.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    August

Teresa began her reliance campaign when she began to lace Jerry's food with extra medication in the hope that he'd begin to rely on her so she could stay around. However, things soon took a turn for the worse near the end of the month when Jerry collapsed. Teresa, however, blamed his overdose on him taking double measures of his tablets. Meanwhile, Tony upped the ante with his eyes firmly set on ruining Kevin's business. He had a sting operation set up which saw Kevin's tow truck being stolen. Without it, Kevin's business was destined for ruin. Tony's cutthroat attitude also extended to one of his elderly tenants, Jed Stone. Wanting the pensioner out of his home, Tony decided to handle the situation himself but the situation spiralled out of control when Jed collapsed. Elsewhere in the month, Deirdre and Ken argued over Ken's book; Michelle met her old flame JD; Nina offered herself on a plate to Dev; Molly and Tyrone tracked down Jackie; and Michelle decided to give Steve a second chance.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    September

Teresa confessed to Jerry early in the month about her attempts at poisoning him, resulting in Jerry banning Teresa from seeing him and the kids. Ken and Roy, meanwhile, were inadvertently arrested for drug dealing as Roy tried to return a mobile phone to a drug dealer. After the bank knocked back Tom's request for a loan for his and Liam's business Lad Rags, Tom turned to Carla who gladly stumped up the cash, much to Liam's dismay. Rosie played her trump card with Tony after he knocked her back in a hotel room. Tony was left stunned when Rosie showed him the video footage of Carla and Liam kissing. He initially feigned ignorance, telling Rosie that he already knew, but his worst fears were confirmed when he returned home to see Carla kissing Liam on his own doorstep. Elsewhere in the month, Mel and Abi were involved in a vicious fight with a gang of girls; Sean made a pass at Tom; Marcus left Weatherfield; Fiz agreed to give John another chance; Dev met Tara; Harry left Weatherfield with Clarissa after showing up Liz; and Rosie went missing.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    October
Tony treated Carla, Liam and Maria to a weekend away at a health spa in October, during which Tony led Liam to the edge of a precipice in a cavern. Instead of pushing him off, he asked Liam to be his best man at his wedding and lied about his falling out with his brother, Pat. In the middle of the month, the chemistry between Liam and Carla became too much to handle and they gave in to temptation again, which saw Liam romp with Carla in her wedding dress - the one she was meant to be marrying Tony in. During Tony's stag do, however, Tony's plan reached a fatal conclusion when Liam was mown down by a speeding car which Tony had organised. Elsewhere in the month, Janice confessed to the lottery scam; Becky ran riot on the streets of Manchester; Rosie's captor was revealed to be John Stape; and Peter returned to the Street.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    November

The beginning of the month saw Rosie lose her temper with her captor John Stape. After weeks of being locked in his gran's attic and a failed escape attempt, Rosie seized the opportunity to attack John with a wooden towel rail, before running to safety. A bewildered Fiz could only watch on as the drama unfolded in front of her eyes. Rosie was eventually reunited with her worried family, who accused Fiz of being in on John's kidnap. John was led away by the police, but Fiz wanted answers and so met with him for one last time in a cell. With her feet back on terra firm, Rosie received a visit from Tony to check whether she was OK. Sally's intrigue heightened, resulting in Rosie showing her mum the video of Carla and Liam kissing. Meanwhile, Ken struggled to keep Peter on the straight and narrow with Simon. It was only when Peter discovered he'd inherited his ex wife Lucy's entire estate to look after Simon that he took a more vested interest. The first thing he did was to buy back the bookies from Dan. Elsewhere in the month, David's old cell mate Graeme turned up in Weatherfield; Dan left the Street; Hayley returned; David, Tina and Graeme demolished the Windass kitchen; and Tina and David rumbled their mother and father's romance.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    December

Not realising that Tony was the man responsible for her true love Liam's murder, Carla became Mrs Gordon at the beginning of the month when she finally said 'I do' to Tony. As the pair departed on their honeymoon, Sally showed a stunned Maria the video footage of Liam kissing Carla from Rosie's mobile phone. From that point onwards, Maria has been adamant that Tony killed Liam. In the second half of the month, Tony returns to a barrage of messages from Maria who wants to talk. When Tony pays her a visit, she accuses him of murdering Liam and manages to get the facts of the event nearly spot on. Tony is forced to come clean to Carla that he knew about her 'affair' with Liam. Meanwhile, the Windass family moved onto Coronation Street, much to the annoyance of the Platts. Elsewhere in the month, Molly confronted Tyrone over his alleged affair with Minnie; Poppy joins the bar staff at The Rovers; a drunken Peter makes a show of himself at Peter's nativity play; Tony loses his temper when Jed continues to blackmail him; and Maria continues her campaign to prove that Tony's a murderer.
