£19m raised for Children In Need appeal

The BBC's Children In Need appeal has raised a record-breaking £19 million for charity.

The 28th annual fundraiser had generated £19,089,771 by the end of last night's seven-hour broadcast, beating last year's 'on the night' figure of £18.3 million. This total will increase as more cash raised from fundraisers held across the country is donated to the appeal.

"We are overwhelmed by the response of the British public tonight and want to say a big thank you to all those who donated or Did Something Different for Pudsey," said David Ramsden, Chief Executive of BBC Children In Need.

"Even more money will pour in over the weeks and months ahead and we will now be looking for great projects around the UK that can make a real difference to young lives."

Last night's show saw the Spice Girls performing their new song 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' from Los Angeles. Kylie Minogue, Annie Lennox, Westlife, the Sugababes and Leona Lewis also performed on the programme.

Meanwhile, BBC newsreaders Fiona Bruce, Dermot Murnaghan, Andrew Marr, Nicholas Owen, Bill Turnbull and Ben Brown gave a rendition of 'All That Jazz' from West End musical Chicago.

Donations for the 2006 appeal eventually topped £33 million.

I don't know. They are in America at the moment preparing for their upcoming tour, I think they did a gig sometime yesterday which meant it would be a close shave to get back to London in time to perform.

It might have been pre-recorded, the article doesn't actually say they performed live.

The spice girls were on early as they were in America. They sang (or should I say mimed) the CIN need song then they were back on later to sing "Stop right Now"

Boyzone really put the Spice Girls to shame, didn't they?

They did. SG are all about how they look, they're not really bothered about what they sound like or if they sing live (IMO).
