    Ronald Magill dies, aged 87

Emmerdale actor Ronald Magill, who starred in the ITV soap for 19 years, has passed away at age of 87.

The soap star, who played the part of Amos Brearly, joined the programme in 1972 when it was known as Emmerdale Farm.

Brearly was a long-standing character in the show alongside the likes of Wilks and Annie Sugden and was famed for his impressive bushy sideburns.

He returned to the soap in 1995 for occasional appearances, including a wedding storyline for his character to Annie.

Magill was originally from Hull, and began his acting career at the Nottingham Playhouse, where he returned later in his career to be named artistic director.

    Unhappy

    "Nay, Mr Wilks!"

What a legend he was. RIP.

I hope they give Amos a good exit and bring Annie back for a funeral.

This is sad to here of Ronald passing away I hope they do have a tribute to him in the show even though he left many years ago. It says in the report that he married Annie I thought it was Mr Wilkes who married Annie.

No it was Amos who married Annie when he made a final guest appearance in the mid 90s. Annie's about the same age as Amos, late 80s. Probably too old to return for a birthday celebration now.

I'm sure Emmerdale will do something, just like they did with Seth. Amos, along with Mr Wilks, Annie, Joe and Jack Sugden, Dolly, Peggy and Matt Skilbeck, and Seth and Alan Turner, were the lynchpins of Emmerdale Farm.
