We’re beside ourselves with glee after hearing that gravel-voiced former Neighbours star Anne Charleston is joining Emmerdale in November. The Aussie actress, who played coffee shop boss Madge Bishop, has landed the role of Lily, the estranged sister of professional busybody Edna Birch.

And Anne, who lives in Ireland, couldn’t hide her delight about the new role, declaring: “I’m over the moon to be joining one of my favourite soaps. It’s a fantastic character.”

Lily arrives in the Dales from Down Under for her great niece Eve’s wedding blessing. Edna’s son Peter invited Lily to the bash in an attempt to rekindle the sisters’ relationship – but the reunion doesn’t go according to plan and it’s not long before sparks are flying. Anne will be in the soap for three episodes in November – but if her character’s a hit, she could be brought back permanently. Personally, we reckon Emmerdale bosses would be mad to let her go.
