When Josh West is mysteriously shot dead in his office, Amanda is the number one suspect. She flees town with little Ryan, but is apprehended by Det. Peter Baker and Jack and taken for questioning. Amanda finally breaks down and explains she went to see Josh with the intention of killing him, but to her shock, when she arrived Josh was already dead. Peter and Jack don't believe her, but when they are interrupted with the circumstantial evidence that Amanda was caught somewhere else on a red light camera at the time of the murder, she is cleared.
Amanda and Dan take Ryan to the beach, and end up locked in a kiss. Leah is walking by, and is stunned to see them kissing. She is confused about her feelings for Dan. Amanda calls on Leah and tells her to stay away from Dan: their marriage is over and he wants to be with her. Amanda is at it again! When Dan tells Amanda there's no way they can get back together, Amanda is truly heartbroken. She packs up and leaves Summer Bay, taking Ryan with her.
Several months later Amanda makes a surprise return to the Bay with Ryan. She's producing a movie to be shot in Summer Bay, much to the annoyance of the residents, particularly Alf. By now Leah and Dan are back together but this is the least of Amanda's worries: her mother Kitty is also in town, desperate to hide the identity of Amanada's daughter from her (Amanada was lead to believe the child died in childbirth). Her daughter is in fact, Belle Taylor.

Tony feels the time has come to propose marriage to Beth. Romance also blooms between Tony's son Lucas and Matilda.
After settling down to domestic bliss, Beth and Tony are shocked to learn of the reason for Tasha's pregnancy. The terrible realisation that when she was with The Believers Tasha was drugged and raped by Jonah hits them hard. Beth tries to console Robbie and Tasha and gives them every support in what ever decision they make concerning Tasha's baby. They decide to keep the baby.
Beth and Tony are shocked when the reliable Lucas goes off the rails, ending his relationship with Maddie and becoming rude and mean. It's revealed that Lucas is conflicted by his growing love for Beth as a mother figure, feeling he is betraying the mother he never knew (his mother died when he was young). They clear the air and Beth is relieved the old Lucas is back.
Kim and Rachel become lovers, even at the risk of her career. Hyde learns to accept his son's relationship with the older Rachel. After being suspended from the hospital, Rachel is surprised to be offered the positon as a Junior Registrar in the Emergency Department. And it's her father who is the new Director of Emergency!
When Kim meets Rachel's father he is at first charmed by him, but is later suspicious of him. It is revealed Rachel's father was drink-driving during the car accident that left Rachel's mother with amnesia. He blackmails his Rachel to cover for him against a charge of professional misconduct. Kim vows to support Rachel when Robert disappears and leaves them to look after her brain-damaged mother.
Rachel is kidnapped by a boy named Charlie who has become obsessed with Kim. He pins his grandmother's death on Rachel and later when Charlie kidnaps Rachel, it's Kim to the rescue when he hears her cries for help in the Surf Club.
