Chrissie woke up on the sofa. She didn't sleep with Den last night, not after what had happened. She glanced at the clock. "10:42am" was shown on the display. Den would be at work. She felt relieved for the first time since she got back. She sat up and rubbed her eyes. She heard a knock on the door. It would be Maria coming to clean the house. She got up and walked out of the room and to the door. She opened it and gasped.
"Maria, what happened to your eye? Are you alright?" She said, the shock obvious in her voice.
Maria stood silently, not looking Chrissie in the eye.
"I must get on with the cleaning." She said quietly.
"No, tell me what happened."
"I shouldn't. He will hurt me again."
"Who will?" Chrissie asked, concerned.
Maria didn't answer. Chrissie's eyes widened as she put the pieces together.
"It was Den wasn't it?" Chrissie said softly.
Maria nodded. Chrissie swallowed. She could understand it if it had happened to her, but to Maria? It just didn't make sense.

"Why did he do it?" Chrissie asked.
"He said something about how I should've stopped you from going and that it was my fault." Maria said quietly.
"You should stop working for him before he really hurts you."
"I can't."
"Why not? You're still young. You have a life ahead of you. And if you don't stop, you'll be throwing it all away." She whispered.
"I can't. My family depends on me. Me and my brother both have to work. Ever since my Dad died, my Mother hasn't been the same. And now that she's ill I have to take care of my little sisters too."
"There are other jobs." Chrissie said softly.
Maria shook her head in disbelief.
"Not like this one. None of my other jobs pay me this much."
Chrissie sighed. She couldn't win.

Alfie was on his stall. It had been a few months since Chrissie had left and everyone was getting on with their lives. Except Jake.

Sharon spotted Alfie and walked over.
"Hi. How are you?" She asked.
"'Ello darlin'. I'm fine." He answered, rubbing his hands together.
"How's Jake doing?" She said softly.
"Not too good. I don't remember the last time he went out."
"Have you tried talking to him?"
"Yeah but he doesn't say much. Have you heard from Chrissie recently?"
"No. She hasn't phoned for weeks. I'm starting to worry about her."
"I think you should tell Jake. He deserves to know."
"Send him over to mine later."
"Ok, I'll try my best." Alfie said, with a nod.
