The fictional town of Weatherfield is situated in the North West of England, a few miles south-west of Manchester.
The small street of Coronation Street can be found towards the centre of the town, and is bordered by the main road into Manchester, Rosamund Street, at one end and the former Great Northern Railway viaduct at the other.
Weatherfield ceased to be part of Lancashire in 1972 when it became absorbed into Greater Manchester. The town is currently presided over by the Weatherfield borough council. The most notable mayor of Weatherfield was greengrocer Alf Roberts, and his three lady mayoresses Annie Walker, Audrey Roberts and Betty Turpin.
Coronation Street itself was built in 1902 and named in celebration of the coronation of King Edward VII. The northern side of the Street has remained relatively unchanged since it was built, however the southern side has been the focus of much redevelopment. The south side of Coronation Street now boasts three modern houses, two shop units and flats, a garage and a factory.
The terraces used to be three bedroomed houses and it wasn’t until the 60s and 70s that occupants began to have the means to install inside bathrooms.
For many years the only telephone in the area was in the local pub, the Rovers Return Inn. Number 13 was the final house to have a telephone installed
