Casualty aired a major turning point in Donna Jackson's ongoing story tonight (August 19), as she confessed all to the police.

Whether you were aware of it or not, tonight's episode was the final in the current series, but don't worry too much, as Casualty will carry straight on next week.

But what will tonight's twist mean for Donna, and what happens next? Here's our quick guide:

Donna has been hiding a dark secret about her role in a devastating car crash last month, which was caused after she fell asleep at the wheel following a long shift.

Donna's guilt has intensified ever since, especially in regards to Ashley ? who was the other driver ? and his mum, who suffered devastating injuries and is in intensive care.

Tonight's scenes saw Donna's shift take a turn when Ashley came back into the ED with more self-inflicted wounds.

Donna felt even worse when she learned that he'd been struggling to pay the rent and had been self-harming. An innocent comment from Stevie later left Donna with food for thought about the example she wanted to set for her children.

When a teenager died on the table following an overdose at a festival, Donna's thoughts turned to her girls again and she started to rethink her earlier lie about the crash.

Wanting to offer Ashley more than just sympathy, Donna offered to pay his rent for the month to ease his financial burden.

However, it wasn't long before Max became suspicious of their connection, especially after spotting Donna handing money over to Ashley.

Max was determined to find out what their link was and interrogated Donna about what was going on.

He asked why Donna would be so willing to help Ashley at all but quickly answered his own question ? guilt, because she caused the car crash.

Donna then confessed all to Max, who had hoped his suspicions weren't true.

An emotional Donna told Max that Ashley's mum was going to die and that he was going to go prison for something she did, insisting that she couldn't let that happen.

To Donna's surprise, Max was seemingly on her side over the whole sorry situation, and reminded her that none of this was intentional.

With Donna adamant that she wanted to confess to the police, Max urged her to think of her children, and what would happen to them if she went to prison.

Despite Max's attempts to dissuade her, Donna eventually went to the police and told them everything ? unaware that Ashley's mum had started breathing on her own, and was likely to make a recovery.

Donna is very much still in the thick of the action next week, with a brand-new romance story to kick off the series.

Donna is initially forced to deal with the aftermath of her actions and the fact it has made her a talking point among her colleagues.

Max demands to know why Donna is at work, and what's going on, and she firmly states that she's allowed to be at work until she gets a date for her sentencing.

Max remains unhappy about this, worrying about the example it sets for everyone else in the hospital.

Their priorities quickly change when they hear that there has been a major incident at a women's march, which Jodie and Rida are attending.

Donna is later faced with a furious Ashley, who demands more money from her which she doesn't have.

At the end of a difficult day, Dylan reaches out to a struggling Donna and offers to cook for her.

Donna then finds herself having another showdown with Max, until passion takes over and they begin to kiss.

Casualty continues on Saturday, August 26 on BBC One.
