Coronation Street stars Jack P Shepherd and Ben Price have teased tense scenes for the Platt family over Christmas.

It's been a turbulent few months for the Platts, following the shocking death of Audrey's serial killer son Stephen Reid. And the trouble doesn't appear to be stopping there, with the on-screen brothers ? David Platt and Nick Tilsley ? revealing what's in store for the iconic family during the festive period.

"Everyone complains! Leanne and Nick have everyone to the Bistro for lunch because Gail doesn't want to cook, and then they all moan that they're allergic to things," Price told Inside Soap.

"But no, it's a set menu: prawn cocktail, turkey, Christmas pudding. That's what Nick's offering so that's what they're getting!"

"No one is happy and everyone is winding each other up," adds Shepherd. "It's your classic Platt family Christmas!"

The cobbles has a busy festive season coming up, with significant storyline announcements and new cast additions landing over the past few weeks. As well as the Rovers reopening its doors on New Year's Eve after being closed for two months, fans can expect to see developments in a number of ongoing story arcs.

Stu's jealously over Eliza's dad Dom heightens, Ed's gambling addiction is set to take a turn and Bernie could miss Paul's last Christmas after landing in trouble with the law.

Following Chris Gascoyne's decision to leave his role of Peter Barlow, his anticipated exit will take centre stage in a special episode on Boxing Day ? with the introduction of Carla's nephew Bobby (played by BGT star Jack Carroll) to follow.

"It's building towards an exit for Peter, which is really brilliant and bittersweet and feels like Corrie at its very best," said producer Iain MacLeod on the emotional goodbye.

Coronation Street and Emmerdale will have less screen time than usual on Christmas Day this year.

Newly-released schedules for the festive season have confirmed that both ITV soaps will only air for 30 minutes each on Monday, December 25.

The usual tradition is to broadcast hour-long specials of each show on Christmas Day, but ITV has taken a different approach this year.

Corrie will air for 30 minutes from 7pm on ITV1 on Christmas Day.

Emmerdale will screen in an earlier slot at 6.30pm, also for 30 minutes.

Coronation Street's episode will be its shortest Christmas edition since 1997, which was the last time the show had a 30-minute slot on the day.

Meanwhile, Emmerdale last had a 30-minute Christmas slot in 2004.

Fans needn't worry too much about missing out, as Corrie will still have three-and-a-half hours' worth of screen time from Monday, December 25 to Sunday, December 31.

This is partly because Corrie will be screening episodes on days that it doesn't usually air in a regular week ? Tuesday, December 26 (Boxing Day) and Sunday, December 31 (New Year's Eve).

Emmerdale also has three-and-a-half hours' worth of content screening between Monday, December 25 and Sunday, December 31 ? including hour-long specials on December 27 and 28.

Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod recently tipped the show's Boxing Day episode as one to watch out for, as it features Chris Gascoyne's departure from the role of Peter Barlow.

MacLeod said: "It all builds up to this incredibly surprising Boxing Day episode. There's a huge two-hander between [Peter and Carla] ? more or less they are the only two cast in the episode.

"It's a greatest hits compilation for those of you that have been big fans of Peter and Carla since the start. It picks over every single detail of who they are, what they've been as a couple, what they want for their future and what happiness looks like for them.

"It's building towards an exit for Peter, which is really brilliant and bittersweet and feels like Corrie at its very best."

Meanwhile, Emmerdale's producer Laura Shaw commented: "Heading up to Christmas, we've got some exciting plans but I have absolutely, definitely been sworn to secrecy on this one!

"What I can tell you is that, in the last couple of years, we've done a light, fluffier Christmas for Emmerdale, but this one is quite different in tone.

"A lot of it is edgier for us for Christmas. I can tell you that definitely not every one of our villagers will be sat down eating their turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas Day."

Coronation Street has revealed its action-packed Christmas and New Year storylines for the punters of the Rovers Return.

It's going to be an eventful festive period for those on the cobbles ? in the run up to Christmas Day, Jenny and Daisy's plan to raise money to buy back the pub sees them resort to desperate measures. But will they be enough?

And, as if Daisy's Christmas holidays weren't stressful enough, her own future is put into jeopardy after her affair with Ryan is exposed, resulting in Daniel shunning her. She's not giving up hope though, and longs for the couple to make up.

For Carla, Christmas sees a heartbreaking departure for Peter. Since he killed Stephen, he has been battling old demons, and been consistently tempted by alcohol again. He decides to leave Weatherfield after struggling with Carla as she continues to attempt to get the factory up and running again; will Peter's departure and Carla's determination spell the end of their marriage?

Stephen's not the only one battling old struggles; Ed finds it difficult to resist gambling again, and the reappearance of Sarge only serves to send his self esteem plummeting further ? to a new low that will hurt the entire Bailey family on Christmas Day.

Gemma and Paul are still struggling with mum Bernie's incarceration. Paul's MND diagnosis also means this Christmas might be his last, so he and Billy are determined to make every moment count ? but Gemma's home life isn't much easier. Following accusations about her capability as a parent, she is struggling.

New Year comes with its own set of dramas; Bethany Platt is back. But is there more to her sudden arrival than meets the eye, or is she really just there to see her family?

This rocks Bethany's mum, Sarah ? who is also shocked at the return of her ex-boyfriend Damon. She has spent New Year's Eve with estranged husband Adam, and begins to think that a reconciliation is possible between the pair, just in time for Damon to pull the rug from under her, take revenge on Adam, and try to win Sarah back.

Finally, Rob Donovan's son Bobby arrives on Carla's doorstep, sending her life into a spin. Is the arrival going to benefit Carla, or will there be more chaos on the cobbles?
