Casualty begins a sad, new story for Charlie Fairhead this weekend (April 25) as he makes an unexpected return to the ED.

Charlie (Derek Thompson) quit his job at the hospital in a fit of rage last month, after discovering that Jacob had reported his worrying behaviour of late.

Sadly, it will become apparent that Charlie has been on a downward spiral ever since that fateful day, having turned to alcohol to numb his pain over his wife Duffy's death.

Saturday's episode will see Charlie brought back into hospital after a fall in the park, leaving Jacob and Connie horrified at the noticeable difference in him.

Charlie is drunk, dishevelled and has clearly been sleeping rough, but is still refusing to accept the help of his former colleges.

Acknowledging that Charlie's impulsive decision to leave the ED was merely the start of his destructive actions, Connie encourages the department to keep his admission quiet, in an attempt to preserve her friend's reputation.

As Connie vows to help Charlie, she's stung when he angrily rejects her support and even brings up her past mistakes with Duffy. Hiding her hurt, Connie ploughs on regardless and urges Charlie to admit that he's got an alcohol dependency problem.

She also takes the opportunity to remind Charlie that his grief will always find him, no matter how hard he tries to find a distraction. Refusing to listen to reason, Charlie eventually discharges himself without Connie's knowledge and heads to the local pub.

Charlie's destructive actions leave Connie and Jacob more concerned than ever for his welfare, but can anyone make him see sense?

Casualty airs these scenes on Saturday, April 25 at 7.25pm on BBC One.
