Dailytelegraph.com.au article on Monday night's Aust season premier:

Another Summer Bay favourite killed off in season return
Soapie fans still reeling from the death of Mason in the 2019 season-ending cliffhanger, are about to be struck by another tragedy.

Home And Away fans will again be reaching for the tissue box as another Summer Bay favourite is killed off in the season opener.

The long-running soap went into the Christmas break with fans reeling from the death of Mason (Orpheus Pledger) during a siege at the hospital where he was shot by one of the men holding staff and patients hostage.

When the credits rolled at the end of 2019, the drama was still in full swing and how it all ends will be revealed in a three-episode special season return tomorrow night.

With Marilyn (Emily Symons), Jasmine (Sam Frost), Alex (Zoe Ventoura), Mackenzie (Em Weir) and Bella (Courtney Miller) all still trapped inside the hospital — and Colby (Tim Franklin) and Dean (Patrick O’Connor) having just run in to try to save the day, any one of these regular cast could be set for their final day in the Bay.

There is much speculation among fans about who is leaving the show, with some sure to be surprised with the sad outcome.

The three-episode block, which was also used to end last season, helps tell this concentrated arc which involves almost everyone from across the series.

It means fans basically get a movie-length version of the show and don’t have to wait a few days for the whole storyline to be revealed.

Jake Ryan, who plays Robbo in the series, agrees.

“Me and Sam and a few of the writers watched the opener just before Christmas and we watched it as one big movie-length thing and it definitely needs it,” he tells Insider. “You don’t want to break that last hour, I think it works really well together. They did a really good job with it.”

Home And Away has evolved over the past decade or so, tackling more topical stories and becoming more relevant to a wider audience, Ryan says.

“What I’ve noticed that we’ve really started to put in is a lot of really relevant stories for kids as well, stuff that is happening out there (in the real world),” he says.

“We’re keeping up with what’s relevant in the world and what young teenagers are going through.”

He believes this expanded mix of stories and his character’s own dramatic journey since joining the show in 2017 has helped attract a new legion of fans. From the moment he showed up in Summer Bay, Robbo has had an interesting time — even by soap opera standards.

He’s had amnesia, been accused of murder (more than once), had his own life threatened (more than once), found out he’s actually a cop and kissed a few of the girls around town (before settling down with Jasmine).

“Compared to when I used to watch it years ago, they’ve got a really good mix now,” he says. “They cover a lot of bases and so many demographics. A lot of guys that I’ve spoken to — husbands and boyfriends — really enjoy the Robbo storyline, it sort of gives them something to watch.”

Home And Away returns tomorrow, on Seven
