Coronation Street has revealed a first look at the upcoming Christmas siege and shoot-out, which sees Gary Windass's feud with Derek Milligan come to a head.

Show bosses have revealed that lives will be in danger over the festive season, as Derek (Craige Els) storms into the Rovers Return on Christmas night and holds the punters hostage with a gun.

Derek wants revenge after another cruel act from Gary has huge personal consequences for him.

When Gary discovers that Derek is secretly planning to sell Underworld to Nick Tilsley and Sarah Platt, he retaliates by tying Derek up and locking him in the furniture shop overnight.

Knowing that Derek fears losing his kids for good if he doesn't join them on a long-promised holiday to Florida, Gary deliberately ensures that he misses the flight.

Derek then blames Gary for ruining his life, so steals an antique rifle from the furniture shop and hunts his nemesis down at the pub.

After terrifying a number of the residents, Derek chases Gary back out onto the Street and they end up fighting on the top of a helter skelter at Weatherfield's Winter Wonderland.

The scenes will ultimately lead to fatal consequences for one character on the Street.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a Coronation Street press day, Mikey North – who plays Gary – explained: "When Derek is threatening everybody in The Rovers, Gary thinks he needs to interrupt this somehow.

"Gary says: 'Take me. If you want me, come outside and have me'. Gary lures him out of The Rovers and we venture into the Winter Wonderland. A shoot-out ensues with the rest of the street. Derek is after most people, really!"

He added: "It was a massive privilege to film these scenes. It was a lot of pressure on each scene, but I really enjoyed it.

"It was fantastic to work with Craige Els, who plays Derek. He went down really well with all of the cast and we were all really fond of him. He gives a fantastic performance.

"It was quite long night shoots and it was exciting to do the scenes. You're in the green room at three in the morning, literally trying to keep going! But it was an honour to be given that storyline.

"The fight on top of the helter-skelter was fun to film. I definitely don't do that every day! We had stuntmen, but we did most of it ourselves. It's always good fun to get in there and fight."


Coronation Street airs an hour-long special on Christmas Day at 8pm on ITV.
