    Exclamation Kel (Joseph Alessi)

Coronation Street viewers will witness the “devastating effects of historic child sexual abuse within a family” in a new storyline.

The soap’s producers and writers have been working with the charity Survivors Manchester on the script.

Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) will see her world “torn apart” when it is revealed that her twin brother Paul (Peter Ash) was sexually abused by their stepfather Kel (newcomer Joseph Alessi).

This story sensitively explores something that is tragically all too common

The “heartbreaking story will explore Paul’s struggle to come to terms with what happened to him and his ultimate fight for justice”.

The ITV soap’s boss Iain MacLeod said he was “very proud of this story”.

He added: “Gemma and Paul’s family background has always been fascinating to me – the inseparable bond of twins but with a huge faultline down the middle, which we’ve hinted at but never explained.

“This story sensitively explores something that is tragically all too common in families in the real world and will highlight the way these painful events still reverberate many years later.

“It will, I hope, allow people who have survived similar abuse and perhaps suffered in silence to find their voice and speak up.”

The soap previously featured a male rape storyline, in which David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) was assaulted after his drink was spiked, which led to an increase in calls to Survivors Manchester.

Coronation Street actor Ash said he has been speaking to Duncan Craig, chief executive of the charity.

“His experience was really similar to Paul’s so it was invaluable for me to be able to talk about all the conflicting emotions and not accepting or realising it was abuse until later on in life,” he said.

Mr Craig from Survivors Manchester said: “This story is going to resonate with so many male survivors, I’m proud of Coronation Street for committing to making sure it’s right….

“I know this story will be difficult but as a survivor I have to say it is vital if we are to understand male sexual violence and abuse.”

I like Paul and think he will cover this storyline well. Hopefully it will also lead to their mother leaving, cannot stand her at all. Gemma will finally see her mum for what she is. I would not be surprised that the mum knew of the abuse and turned a blind eye. Thats why Paul hates her.

I do hope Paul gets acting lessons for this part, he is so OTT for the smallest thing
Not all mothers know what is happening in their families, maybe Gemini's mother is going to get the blame when she actually had no idea.
HOw would she know? not as if she is sitting and accepting

Having worked around child abuse unfortunately I have come across cases where the mother knew and did nothing. In one case on discovery making it easier for her boyfriend to abuse her daughter.

of course, some parents know, but not all and it's so easy to lay blame, very sensitive issue, just hope Paul can deliver

Coronation Street star Joe Alessi has confirmed that his character Kel Hinchley won't be staying on the show.

Kel arrived on the cobbles last month, and show bosses are exploring a historic sexual abuse storyline as Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) was groomed and sexually abused by his stepfather when he was a child.

Speaking on Lorraine this morning (October 4), Alessi said that the nature of his evil character means that his time in Weatherfield will be "finite".

"I don't know, I have no idea," he said, when asked about how long Kel will be sticking around for. "It's open-ended.

"The character I'm playing, it's finite. I'm never going to be a regular on Coronation Street, that's for sure. My role will come to an end at some point."

The storyline will eventually see Paul explore his desire for justice, with producer Iain MacLeod previously explaining: "This story sensitively explores something that is tragically all too common in families in the real world, and will highlight the way these painful events still reverberate many years later.

"It will, I hope, allow people who have survived similar abuse and perhaps suffered in silence to find their voice and speak up."

He can be charged. Look at all the cases there have been recently about child grooming and pedophilia dating back to the 70s and 80s.
