Casualty aired Gem Dean's final scenes in tonight's dramatic double bill (August 10) as she decided to swap the ED for sunnier climates abroad.

The first half of Saturday's explosive series finale saw Gem make the big decision to leave Holby and join her boyfriend Rash in Thailand.

Although Rash is due to return imminently, Digital Spy can confirm that Rebecca Ryan has filmed her final scenes with the show and there are no current plans for Gem to return at the moment.

Gem has spent the last few weeks contemplating whether to go and meet Rash, who hasn't been seen on screen since April.

Although Gem's plan was always to join Rash on his travels eventually, Iain's struggles have meant that she's been forced to say put.

As Gem continued to battle with her divided loyalties between her boyfriend and brother, tonight's scenes saw a supportive Iain urge her to put herself first for once.

Determined to support her, Iain even paid for a delighted Gem's ticket overseas – allowing her to leave the ED with a smile on her face.

Unfortunately, it looks like Gem and Rash's reunion abroad is set to be short-lived, as he will be back on screens in next week's episode (August 17).

Fans will have to wait and see what brings Rash back to Holby so unexpectedly, but either way, it sadly doesn't look like him and Gem will be living happily ever after.

Rebecca first joined as Iain's sister Gem in 2017. She was then reintroduced as a regular in 2018, when Gem took on the job as a porter.
