    Exclamation Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove)

Coronation Street has announced that former Casualty star Jane Hazlegrove is joining the cast this summer.

Hazlegrove – who played Kathleen 'Dixie' Dixon on Casualty between 2006 and 2016 – will play Gemma Winter and Paul Foreman's estranged mother Bernie, who will be introduced to viewers in July.

Bernie is described as "an old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit".

She has let down her children in the past on numerous occasions, and even disappoints Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) in this week's episodes without appearing on screen as she fails to pick up her daughter, who makes plans to leave the cobbles.

Bernie's appearance in a few months will 'ruffle feathers' as she tries to support Gemma through her pregnancy, but Paul is suspicious of her.

"I'm thrilled to be joining Coronation Street," Hazlegrove said. "It's where I started by apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can't wait to get stuck in."

A spokesperson for the show added: "Like mother, like daughter. We are very pleased that the fantastic Jane Hazlegrove has agreed to join the cast as the irrepressible and impossible Gemma's even more irrepressible and impossible mother.

    "Fur will fly!"

Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) currently doesn't know Gemma is pregnant, but will find out later this week.

Eurgh! Just read that article! Corrie scriptwriters have been taking the p*** for a while now - so now they're going to build a storyline around it!

Coronation Street confirms when Bernie Winter will return as Jane Hazlegrove reprises her role

Coronation Street's Bernie Winter has been one of our favourite characters over the last year or so (we just love Jane Hazlegrove), so we're happy to report that she will be coming back, and coming back soon!

Inside Soap magazine has revealed that the former Casualty actress has already returned for filming, meaning that Bernie's on-screen comeback is only a handful of weeks away.

Bernie left the cobbles recently after learning her ex Kel had sexually abused her son Paul, and her attempts to bring him to justice ended up backfiring big time.

We know that an upcoming storyline will see Bernie's daughter Gemma, who is already struggling with being mum to the quads, attend a parenting group and be picked on by some other women.

Actress Dolly-Rose Campbell has explained that Gemma will start struggling with her mental health because of the stress she's under, and it looks like this will be the reason that Bernie makes a return.

"Bernie knows her better than anyone," Dolly-Rose recently said, "and it is going to take someone close to her to recognise what she is going through and that this is more than just struggling with the babies, she does need real help to get through this."

Hopefully Bernie will be able to provide the support her daughter needs when she returns.

I think they missed out the word "least" between the words our and favourite!

    https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/cor...elease-prison/

Coronation Street has revealed a first look at Bernie Winter's return to Weatherfield, following her time behind bars.

Bernie was handed a prison sentence before Christmas after she was caught out for illegally selling electronics, as part of a scam to help raise money for her son Paul Foreman to buy equipment to help him live with his Motor Neurone Disease.

Bernie and her family were devastated by the fact that she had to spend Christmas in jail, but it looks like she will be heading back home very soon.

In scenes airing on Friday, January 19, Bernie is released from custody. After she arrives back on the cobbles, Bernie calls at The Rovers to find that Paul, Billy Mayhew and Dev Alahan have organised a surprise party for her.

As her friends and neighbours gather to celebrate her release, Bernie is overwhelmed ? but there is still plenty for her family to deal with.

With Paul's MND progressing, he has decided to try to move forward with his assisted dying plan.

Recently, as his symptoms have progressed further, Paul has confided in Todd Grimshaw about his feelings 0ver the possibility of ending his own life.

Todd is sympathetic to Paul and takes him to see Dr Gaddas. But when she refuses to prescribe him morphine, Paul soon turns to Abi Webster for help instead.
