Grange Hill legend Lee MacDonald is joining EastEnders for a new plot involving Danny Dyer's Mick Carter.

It's been over 30 years since MacDonald last appeared on TV, having put acting aside to instead run a locksmith and key-cutting business. He played Zammo McGuire on the children's TV series, as pictured above.

However, The Sun reports that EastEnders bosses have convinced him to join the show.

The tabloid says that MacDonald will feature in two episodes of the BBC One soap this summer, playing a bus driver who will compete with Mick Carter in a radio competition to win tickets to a gig.

Speaking about being cast in the role, MacDonald said: "I am absolutely chuffed to bits and so excited to be briefly joining the cast of EastEnders. I can’t say too much yet but watch this space. Top banana!"

On returning to acting, he added: "My agent wants me to drop the shop. She says I should try and push myself as an actor and not a locksmith. But I’m quite happy to say I’m a locksmith, 'cause that's what pays the mortgage!"

MacDonald played Zammo McGuire on Grange Hill from 1982 to 1987.
