    Exclamation Spike (Joel Morris)

Next week on Coronation Street, we'll see Gemma get herself a new boyfriend with the wonderful name of Spike.

The actor who will play Spike is called Joel Morris - and he's been on Corrie before.

The last time Joel Morris was in Coronation Street he played a character called Chris.

Joel has also appeared in Emmerdale, Call the Midwife, No Offence, Fortitude and in films such as A Room for Romeo Brass.

But what does Spike want with Gemma and will him turning up on the Street put a spanner in the works for Chesney, who wants Gemma for himself?

    Well, ***SPOILER ALERT** read on:

    Next week...

When Chesney's romantic chemistry with Gemma Winter seems to be going nowhere, Emma (Alexandra Mardell) steps in and starts dating him instead.

The latest twist unfolds after Chesney asks Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) out and waits nervously for her at the Bistro.

Much to Chesney's surprise, Gemma has no idea that he thinks it's a date and soon turns up with her troublesome old friend Spike instead.

To save Chesney any embarrassment as Gemma spontaneously gets passionate with Spike, Emma kindly steps in to make it a double date.

Things become highly awkward as Chesney, Emma, Gemma and Spike all sit down to dinner. Emma clearly has genuine feelings for Chesney, but Chesney and Gemma secretly fancy each other. This is getting messy...

Later in the week, Gemma confides in Rita Tanner that Spike stayed the night, but admits he's no substitute for Chesney.

Chesney is also downbeat when Emma arranges another date with him, but she assures him that it'll be good practice for when he meets the girl of his dreams.

Over dinner, Emma makes notes on Chesney's performance as a boyfriend and even suggests some improvements. Could this come in handy for Chesney if he ever gets with Gemma?

Sam Aston, who plays Chesney, revealed: "Spike is a 6 foot 4, tattooed to the nines, broad man who is the complete opposite of Chesney, and he feels horrific.

"It couldn't go any worse for Chesney when they have the mix-up over the date, but he doesn't want to come across as a loner with flowers, waiting for Gemma. It's one of the most embarrassing situations that he could be in. It's soul destroying for him.

"Chesney sees Bethany in the Bistro and he wants her to stand in as his date, but Emma suggests herself so he just goes with it. It's so awkward and Emma is really hamming it up, so Chesney is dying inside. Chesney is jealous of Spike, but he also takes an instant dislike to Spike because he is rude. The whole thing is a nightmare for Chesney!"

Discussing Emma's dating tips for Chesney, Sam laughed: "He needs them, but doesn't really want to say he needs them because he is lousy when it comes to dating.

"He has got his son and because of the way things ended with Sinead, he has not thought about jumping into another relationship. He has not had many girlfriends and he has not been on many dates so it's uncharted territory for him. He should take Emma's advice!

"I do think Chesney and Gemma would be good together. They say opposites attract and they are very opposites, they are like chalk and cheese. But they work great as friends as well, so we will see."
