Former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy is joining Holby City in a guest role.

The actor will play an adventurous patient who winds up on Holby's Darwin Ward after running away from his retirement home.

Sylvester is best known for portraying the Doctor from 1987 to 1989, before he regenerated into the Time Lord's eighth incarnation – played by Holby's very own Paul McGann.

Executive Producer of Holby City and Casualty, Simon Harper, said: "Sylvester is a fantastic actor and a TV icon – and there's an added buzz in having both the seventh and eighth Doctor Who under one roof at Holby! Let's hope it doesn't result in a Time Paradox..."

Sylvester added: "Just what a hospital needs: two Doctors Who!"

Sylvester will begin filming with the show in the next few weeks, with his first scenes airing on screen in the autumn.
